"Something Blue" Bridal Heart Brooch...

I completed the "Something Blue" Bridal Heart Brooch on Wednesday and am so excited to debut it today. My nephew's fiance' will receive this at her bridal shower on Sunday.

I estimate approximately 20 hours of stitching went into creating the finished piece and love how it turned out. I didn't have (and so far can't locate a source for) baby blue brilliant check purls (the sparkling fiber I used on the red hearts, as well as the frogs and religious heart pieces) so I used beautiful seed beads instead. I just as happy with the end result.

I'm going to be offering these brooches as bridal gifts, and will work with my clients to choose the color blue they prefer (I do have an assortment of blue check purls - sadly not in baby blue; or they can select from an assortment of blue seed beads combined with silver check purls.) I think the silver coordinates better with the blues than gold. The client can also choose to keep or add the center cross, per their personal preference. Perhaps they're having a civil ceremony and would like to omit the cross?

Of course, the bride can then choose to wear it on the waist of her gown, under her gown on the petticoat or on her garter, or incorporate it into her bouquet. I'd just suggest she remove it before she tosses her flowers to the next bride.

As with all my needlework pieces, it is my fond hope that they will become treasured family heirlooms, and this piece especially. I will include a card that the original bride, as well as future brides can add their name to in the event you would like to keep a family record.

Each brooch will be carefully packaged in a chiffon drawstring bag, which is then tucked into a presentation box to protect it. If you're interested in purchasing one of these brooches, please contact me for pricing information and/or to arrange a commission. Thanks!

  2. I was a florist for many years and I would ask the bride if they had any special item they would like to incorporate in their bouquet. I would be so moved by their stories behind the item. I always made a smaller bouquet for their toss. Recently I was asked to do the bouquets for the court of Homecoming and I casually asked if anyone had something they would like added to their bouquet as a memento. One gal wanted something purple because she just lost her Aunt to Alzheimers. Brought back memories of my time before I retired. Your piece is a beautiful one. Thnx for your talent

  3. You have hit on a real winner with these! I can't imagine a bride who wouldn't want one no matter what type of ceremony they have. And the addition of the card to record future uses is a stroke of genius too.

    1. Hi MA:
      Thanks so much! The hard part is coming up with a price, considering the time I have in them. Any suggestions?

    2. Nope - sorry! I don't have a clue how to price things and I'm told that I always undersell my items. I usually end up just deciding what I'm happy with getting and settle on that. Maybe you could ask Mr. Google or Ms. Etsy?

  5. Are the purls what’s on outside edge of red ones? What does the back of this one look like? Love it so much! Charlene in Phoenix

    1. Hi, Charlene;
      The silver metallic on the outside edge of the red hearts is a goldwork thread called "pearl purl". The sparkly red on the inside of the hearts is called "brilliant check purls". Pearl purl is like a hollow coil which is couched to the ground fabric. The check purls (meant to be cut) are like a miniature slinky, also hollow in the middle. After it's cut, it's applied like flexible beads. I sent you a text showing the back. I used a thin silver metallic kid for the backing, but actually prefer the cork for a cleaner finish, unless I can locate a bit thicker metallic.

  7. Gorgeous! Stunning gift. An heirloom quality piece for sure. Instead of a cross, maybe a silver heart or two hugging hearts? Maybe there's a way to pearlize beads blue?
