Farmhouse Renovation - Study...

Hickory Hill Farm Study - Before

We've been inside the past two days. Handsome and I tackled the room that will be his study. Number Two son came to help. We really needed that help, too. He's our carpenter, he really knows what he's doing, and it took three of us to move some of the furniture components. Bonus for us is that it's always great to have him by.

This is how the study looked when we first came to the farm. The previous owners had used this room as a den. The real estate listing photos showed a television in here. I'm sure it was a comfortable room for the family to gather and watch their favorite programs. We decided to use this room as Handsome's office. We're calling it "the study".

Once the carpeting came up, we were left with adhesive-covered boards, but our flooring contractor assured us that he could restore the floors when we were ready.

Before the floors would be refinished, my uncle stripped the wallpaper, and painted the walls and ceiling. We continued our wall and woodwork colors throughout the house. (Sherwin Williams Repose Gray on the walls and ceiling, and Ibis White on all the woodwork.)

We were still in Florida when the floors were refinished. We were thrilled with the way they turned out, and our flooring contractor was right. He restored all the farmhouse floors to their original glory. We opted to stay with natural finish, rather than stained, and then they got a heavy duty protective sealant as the final step. We loved the way they turned out, and now they were ready for our move-in.

Everything Still In Boxes

Since the moving trailers were emptied, this is how the room has looked. It's right off the kitchen space on one side, with a door leading to the living room on the other. It was stuffed to the brim with boxes whose contents are meant to be in this room. We also had Handsome's modular teak desk in here just waiting to be reassembled.

We knew that once it was time to tackle this room, we'd have to move all the boxes into the kitchen so we could first put the desk together. Moving those boxes out was a task we weren't anxious to begin, but it had to be done, so we emptied the room of all contents except the furniture pieces on Wednesday morning.

Our son arrived mid-afternoon, after he finished his own work for the day, and helped Handsome and me pull the desk together. There are six separate pieces to the desk, plus a credenza and the smaller secretary desk. He spent another five hours with us, but when he was finished, the desk was all put together. We all called it a night.

Hickory Hill Farm Study - Nearly Finished

Yesterday morning, Handsome and I had to tackle all the boxes that were stacked square in the middle of the kitchen. We began around 10 am, and by 8 pm, all the boxes were emptied.

As you can see from the photo, we still have a few things to do, like putting up artwork, choosing track lighting fixtures, putting away paperwork, and putting away the last of the box contents. Once that's completed, I'll take photos of the entire room for you.

When we called it a night last night, it was with quite the sense of accomplishment...and a few aching muscles. I think we'll rest a little today, and take a Tylenol or two. I think we've earned it.

  3. A real Man's Study and it looks just right. Lots of work and lots of time but the end result is so worth it. Having your son help must be extra wonderful. Happy Studying Handsome...<3
