Uncooperative Thumbs...

Knitting The Heel Flap

I'm knitting as much as my arthritic thumbs will allow. I knit until I can't and then I take a break. This sock would usually take me a day to knit, but my thumbs are howling after an hour or so.

I knit; stop to take a break; knit; repeat. I'm trying not to be frustrated, but...sheesh. This issue usually goes away as quickly as it flares. Eventually, I'll be back to pain-free, but for now, my thumbs are giving me grief. I'll get this sock finished over the weekend, but my hopes for having it finished by today's post were dashed by my temperamental hands. Sorry to disappoint. These are really going to be beautiful...soon. I'll just keep plugging away as I'm able, and I'll aim to have them finished and photographed for Monday's post.

Hope your thumbs are better today.

Yes, thanks! I'm doing a lot more knitting today. Seems everything is always better on the weekend. ;-)

  2. Very nice. They look so soft. I knit but have a difficult time with more than two needles!

    1. Hi Bonnie:
Thanks! It takes a little practice to use more than two needles, for sure, but I have friends who make two socks at a time on circular needles, and I just can't even wrap my head around that!

  3. You can knit a sock in a day? A day???!!! It takes me a month to do even one and I simply cannot imagine how you can do this. How I would love to be a fly on your wall and figure out how you do it!! If I want to knit socks for our small family for Christmas I need to start now or I won't stand a chance.
Hope your thumbs feel better (I know how that feels!)

    1. ps...what pattern are you using? I'm always searching for an easy one to add to my one lonely pattern I do.

    2. Hi MA:
Yes. I've knit up a sock in a day in the past. I'm a little slower these days, as you can well see. I'm using a great pattern that was actually a freebie. If you send an email to me, I'll be happy to share it with you.

  4. “It takes as long as it takes.” Do not fret dear. Relax your thumbs and let them rest. I take Kirkland brand (Costco) Glucosamine HCI with MSM 1500mg. It really helps with my thumb joints…and maybe even a knee or two.

  5. Donna, I just had posted on my blog about having to take "breaks" while knitting to rest my fingers. I don't put pressure on myself anymore to get things done by a certain time. I love the yarn you are using. I have been buying yarn from Heidiandlana.com. Margaret is a small shop in Ohio out of her house. She and her husband run the business together. I use her yarn almost exclusively now. Just so easy to work with and it helps a small shop. After I finish the inch I have on my shawl, I'm going to start a pair of socks called "Journey". They were created by Margaret. I will be posting them when I have them done. Can't wait to see your socks finished! Hugs!

    1. Funny how our minds think alike, Sherri. I sometimes push myself for my blog posts, but I'm getting to the point where my blog will have to follow my body, rather than the other way around. It's nice that you're supporting Margaret's small business. I'm sure she appreciates it. I'll check out her link. This yarn was a gift from my friend, Marrianne in New Zealand. It's really wonderful to work with and will be warm and soft to wear. I'll come over and check you blog, too! Thanks again, dear.
