Third Time A Charm...

After taking out my joins twice, I decided to go online to find a technique I'd be happy with. I found a fabulous tutorial at Attic 24 for joining granny squares (here). It's the crochet method, as opposed to the sewn method, and I like the way these joins look a whole lot more.

I started over again and now I'm chugging right along. I've actually completed the body of the cardigan...
adding the two front shoulder pieces. (I took these photos while I still had good light yesterday late afternoon.) Since I took the pictures, I've added the back yoke area and am nearly finished with one sleeve. Soooo close! I can see that I'll be finished soon.

What are you working on these days? Gardening, some new project for the house, or are you busy in your studio, too? I'd love to know!

  1. The colors you chose are so very pretty and it has a soft warm look to it. I want to learn how to crochet. It looks easy and yet I am intimidated! What I'd like to start working on are some of my samplers and pin keeps, needlebooks, etc. I have a doll that I want to complete. Her face is the pressed cloth molded method. You make a plaster cast of the mold they supplied, you steam the felt over the mold, put the plastic mother mold on top and clamp with these mega pony clips and voila! you are supposed to have a face. I can't wait to finish and I'll post pictures on my blog. Happy stitching.

  2. Looks very nice Donna. I don't do as much crocheting as I used to but I always did prefer joining with the crochet method. Gives a more finished look I think.

    Have a wonderful day!

  3. Thanks for the link Donna, for a refresher course. When I first started crochet more than ahhh, 40?, years ago, I started with grannies and always liked to crochet them together rather than sew. You have me thinking grannies again!

  6. Hi Donna! It's looking great! Can't wait to see you model it! I knit random projects, mostly in the evening. I have had to give my crocheting a rest because my wrists were hurting. I have taken up painting and enjoying that Very much! Have a beautiful day! Twyla

  8. The sweater is coming right along and so much prettier in these "chosen" colors. The cotton yarn will make it nice to wear all year long. I am working on Crazy Quilting and learning new stitches, while listening to books on CDs. A great way to keep up with my "reading" and stitching!

  9. It's lovely. I use that method of joining for my cushions. Very neat. At the minute I am in the middle of a poncho for my dd as well as other numerous stitching projects. x

  10. My Grandma always slip stitch crocheted her grannies together as it was a much nicer finish. Everything old is new again. :o)
Your sweater will be so lovely. Now it would be fun to select another yarn pallet for another sweater while you have it fresh in your mind. Your work is always so neat and beautiful. Happy stitching...

  11. I Love Granny squares and like to sit in recliner in the winter in front of the T V and work on afghans...but I usually never finish them before winter is over...guess that is because I usually make more than one at a time...gets to boring otherwise. I love your colors and the one I am working on now is hunter green and burgandy. It has been set aside for now until it is to cold to go work in the yard :)

  12. Looking good...I always use the crochet method for joining...seems to hold better and look more finished...haven't made a granny square in years but am thinking strongly of making a baby afghan for our new grandson...looking forward to seeing your sweater when its done...such pretty colors!

  13. Hi Donna, your jacket is coming along nicely. :)
It is Winter here in Australia, but there is still a bit to do in the garden. I had to cut back some geraniums that were growing too high, and also tend my newly planted pansies. The daisies need deadheading so that is my next job. I am also handquilting my Xmas quilt that I hand pieced about 4 years ago. At least it will adorn my bed THIS Xmas. LOL.
I have always crocheted my granny squares together, although I have not made any garments, only rugs. Sandy. :)
