My Piling System...

Brynwood Needleworks - Fabric Studio Chaos

I'm still sorting...and cleaning...and I'm tired. I took Sunday off and just rested. There's a whole lot more in this room than I'm sharing in this single image. You can see I still have organizing to do here, and the closet in this room is where I discovered the fabric that I thought was gone. I'm sure more treasures will surface as I continue working in here.

Brynwood Needleworks - Sewing Studio Chaos

While I'm cleaning out this room, I'm still shipping orders and doing my computer work. I need to keep a little free space to be able to do that. I vacillate between keeping and tearing out those cupboards. This room was an upstairs kitchen at one time, and the cupboards are the remains of that function.

I look at the storage they provide, or wonder whether or not the beautiful maple floors go all the way to the wall if I take them away, and decide I'd better keep them where they are (at least for now). Then, I decide I'd better focus on my tasks, or this is going to take a lot longer.

Brynwood Needleworks - Orderly Thread

I have sorted my threads by manufacturer and color into the DMC cabinets I used to have in my shop. Valdani™in the first four, then DMC™ 8 in the next four, DMC™ 12 and 5 in a single drawer, Sulky™ 12 spools, and the bottom two drawers hold more machine embroidery threads. Aren't they pretty?

Brynwood Needleworks - Floss Cabinet

I also cleaned up my antique spool cabinet, adding my Anchor™ pearl cotton balls to the DMC™ and Anchor™ floss, and a few other specialty threads. Small accomplishments, with more to do.

I have quite a few bolts of fabric pulled now to donate, or photograph and list. I need to clean my counters off first. In the meantime, I'm taking the chance to show you that I'm just like you. Sometimes my workspace looks like a bomb went off. It's not always "Better Homes and Gardens" or "Where Women Create". Sometimes, it's just an embarrassing, chaotic mess of creative supplies.

It's okay. I'll get this back under control again. It won't take much longer. Another day or so and we'll be good to go. I should be able to start listing up fabric by the end of the week.

I'm glad I have Tag to take up a little slack for me tomorrow. I hope he has something polite planned for tomorrow (for a change). We'll have to see. In the meantime, I'm going to have a cuppa coffee and get back to my sorting. I'll see you again on Wednesday.

  1. That’s an inventory! Can I ask why some of the rulers have what looks like blue tape on them? I have just started my first quilting piece and am complete novice. Love your antique spool cabinet.

    1. Hi Bonnie:
I don't know how it got this way! I remember packing us up to move out of Florida, and I was actually a little shock how many boxes it took.My friend, Kathy came to help me unpack those boxes, and said that I completely put her off the idea of ever moving. I know you'll have fun making your first quilt, and you'll be off and running from there! I've had this spool cabinet for decades. I used to have an antique tabletop desk, too. It had four drawers, and was also really cool.I'm kinda bummed that I sold it years ago.
      Thanks for the note!

    1. Hi Mary:
It was my pleasure, even though I'd prefer to only show photos when my spaces are perfectly clean and tidy. Ahhh. The things I do for my online friends. Thank you, dear. I think my cabinets and such are like purses. The bigger they are, the more you put in them. eek! I'm not going to give up, though. I'll keep chipping away at this until I trim it down enough to turn my fabric room into a guest room. I'm committed to it!

    1. Hi Marilyn:
That's part of my problem. It looks so pretty that I love simply looking at it. I'm going to have to force myself to be realistic about what I will or won't ever use, and then let the majority of it go. (I think I can. I think I can.) ;-)
You'd be surprised how often my spaces look like they do here. Hats off to those who can actually keep things tidy all the time. whew!

  4. Oh goodness - how I would love to come and fondle those fabrics and threads! Going through your discard pile would be a joy too. And seeing the peeks of the wonderful storage solutions you have in place makes me drool. 'Where Women Create' should feature your space for sure!!!

    1. Hi MA:
Wouldn't that be fun? You're welcome any time! I sometimes wonder that these rooms might even scare off "Where Women Create", but I thank you for the thought!
Let me know when you're in the area! ;-)

  5. LOL! Thank you for sharing your beautiful work area in disarray! It is an encouragement to those of us whose rooms almost always look that way! I can so totally relate to jumping into a project like that and then getting slowed by considering other projects (like removing cabinets...) In our home we call it the "squirrel!" syndrome (think Doug from the movie, UP!) But it is such a wonderful feeling when all that is done and the creative juices are able to flow more freely! Keep up the good work!

    1. Hi Lois!
Awww. You're so sweet. Yes. "Squirrel Syndrome" is a thing here, too. I get sidetracked, even when I recognize that it can happen, and I really try to avoid distractions.I frequently put something down in favor of something else, and then it takes me forever to find the first item again. It can take three times as long to finish my cleaning. Oh, and I LOVED "Up!"
      Thanks for the note!

  6. Nothing looks chaotic to me. I love to see your creative spaces. I love when I find treasures I thought were lost or at least forgotten. Now if only I could find my antique salt and pepper containers filled with glitters. They have been MIA since we moved three lus years ago. Hubby never liked glitter so I have a suspicion they got trashed before the move.

    1. Hi Sherry:
I well-know the feeling. I still have boxes of books in the (very dry, thankfully) basement storage area. There's a separate room that is separate from the main part of the downstairs. The boxes are carefully lined up, sitting on plywood to keep them off the ground (just in case). We don't have bookcases in the living space like we did in Florida, and I really miss having them readily accessible. I just know there are more treasures there that are forgotten. Of course, cleaning my studio always reveals something I "misplaced". I have to be careful not to put them away to be lost again. ugh. Fingers crossed. I hope you find that glitter! ;-)
