Mother Nature's Weathermen...

Wooly Bear Weather Predictions via Instagram

Have you seen any wooly bears yet? I've seen more than a few looking to settle in for the cold weather. It was in the 30s night before last, and in the 40s last night.

Claudette's sleeping in the little insulated, fleece-lined fabric "igloo" I bought for her, and I've enveloped it in a little quilt, too. She's still sleeping on the front porch, but I'll be moving her into the Compass Barn before too long. I check on her every night before I go to bed, and she's all curled up, purring for me. I think it's her version of "Thanks, Mom!"

Anyway, I've seen two versions of wooly bears so far. Number Two and Number Three. That works for me, if we can expect a moderate or mild winter. So, I'm going to keep looking, and if I've got my phone handy, I'll take a few photos, too.

After all the snow we had last year, a mild or moderate winter would be nice...especially since Handsome is going to stay home from Florida this year. Fingers crossed, okay?

    1. Hi Marilyn:
I usually see them when I'm moving something in the yard. They're already looking for places to shelter overwinter. (I was cleaning the Compass Barn potting "shed" area today, and there was one in the straw I was sweeping up.) New hay bedding for Claudette (and Leo) for the winter. I made toasty warm digs for them in the Compass Barn.

  2. It’s so nice to see how you care for Claudette. I saw an ALL BLACK wooly bear this week. I love winter but ...

    1. Hi Bonnie:
I love that tough, little cat. I just want to keep her safe and warm, and let her know she's loved. Now, about that wooly bear. Let's hope that one had a pigmentation issue, so it doesn't speak accurately to our upcoming winter. The last thing we need in the north this year is a severe winter. Heating costs will be outrageous this winter, and it's going to cause hardship for many. I'm going to put in a request for a mild winter before I close my eyes tonight.

  3. The info about wooly bears is interesting and something I never knew. The apple trees here are absolutely laden - more apples than I've seen in years (if ever) and if the old adage is true, that predicts a horrible winter to come. I truly hope that's not the case!!!! I haven't seen any wooly bears but if I do I will pay attention.
I must admit I was really hoping Handsome would opt out of going to Florida. I know it's much warmer there and he will miss his music, but it sure doesn't sound like it's a state that's dealing well with covid. Good for him for being cautious!! Maybe he can figure out how to Zoom with his music group and play that way?? Not the same as being 'out in public' but at least it would be something.

    1. Hi MA:
I hope the apple trees are wrong, as many people will suffer greatly if that's the case. I'm glad we prepaid our winter fuel this year. The price is capped, so it won't cost us more than what we prepaid.
Handsome said he just didn't want to be away from me this winter. I know there's another surgery in my future, which I was willing to put off until his usual return date, but he didn't want me to put it off until Spring. (It's already scheduled for January.) We'll keep in close touch with our Florida friends. It will be flu season here soon, so I'm actually more concerned that he's staying here, when the weather would be better for him in Florida. We've come to an agreement, though, and we're taking the recommended therapeutics to keep us healthy through the winter and beyond. (Don't tell him, but I'm glad he's staying home, too. I miss him terribly when he's away.) Thanks so much for your concern.

    2. I imagine flu is prevalent no matter where you are and I expect, with things opening up a bit more these days, that it will be back in full force. Additional good reason to get the flu shots! Not that it totally prevents getting the flu but at least it will lessen the effects if you do.

  4. Here in Georgia we watch the spiders. The more webs and spiders you see, the colder and wetter the winter will be. Not sure that the spiders are very accurate! There were lots last year, and we had a very mild winter. It’s been several years since we’ve even seen snow, so I hope we see some this year.

    1. Hi Andrea:
My BFF lives in Northern Georgia. It's beautiful country. I hope the spiders in abundance bode well for a mild winter, not worse. I love the change of seasons, and snow is okay with me, but I'm not a fan of bitter cold. Fingers crossed!
