A Blanket Of Memories...

I purchased this red and white quilt about twelve years ago from Orvis. I've enjoyed many warm nights sleeping under it, and I'll admit that more than a few of those nights, a Labrador or two enjoyed sleeping on top of it.

Over the years, it has become a bit threadbare. Seams have split. Some of the batting is starting to show through. It's been well-loved and well-used.
I don't want to discard it, so my solution is to repair it. I don't intend to try to make it look good-as-new. I want it to retain the character that has come from years of use.

This quilt wasn't constructed with a binding, but it will when I repair it. That raggedy edge is going to be bound with a new fabric to keep it from falling apart at that weak point.
Then, I'm going to examined the entire top (and back) and make patches with one or both of the two fabrics in this picture. My patches will be random, and probably a new shape. I (do) want the repairs to be obvious. I want them to stand out from the original. My handwork on top of the work of another. Preserving the memories (and a little dog hair) imbedded in each stitch. Imagine the lengths to which I would go had it been made by a loved one! I'll share photos in the coming days to show you how I've repaired it.

Happy Monday, y'all! I hope you find something creative to do this week.

  1. I so love this Donna...that you are going to repair this quilt with all the memories included!!! The patches, dog hair and randomness will make it a precious keepsake for you!!!

I think if a quilt had a soul, all it would desire would be to know it was loved, appreciated and know that it kept us warm on a cold night ~ hugs and love, Dawn

  2. I have a quilt that my grandma made for me when I was young and it needs repair as well. It's something I know I have to do, but I've been putting it off!

  3. It's a lovely quilt and I can understand why you want to save it. I love the idea of appliqueing over the threadbare spots, adding layers of design, colour and love. It will be fabulous, of that I'm sure!

  5. I'm so glad you're doing this. There is just something about cutting up a quilt to use for other purposes that makes me cringe. I'd rather make a small scrap of quilt and make it look old, than cut up a quilt. I'm the same way about books. :)

  7. It is great you are repairing instead of trashing the quilt. I think it is interesting that you would want your patches to show. I can understand this if it had been made by someone known to you. But for a bought quilt, why would the patches matter? Just wondering?

  9. I know that quilt is just so soft and cozy! Something about cotton over the years that gets snuggly good! :)

  10. I love the fabric you have chosen for the repairs. Of course there should be treasures hidden underneath. A little dog hair from our loyal companions I consider a treasure. Thanks for the visit. Time seems to just be flying by so fast. I can't seem to get back in the swing of things after our road trip.
