Butterfly Progress...

Brynwood Needleworks - RSN Butterfly Upper Wing Progress

I spent last evening with the Paneras ladies again. Because of the lighting in the restaurant, I didn't take my butterfly to work on, but this is how much I've done since my last update. The upper wing is coming along nicely, don't you think?

I'll continue to work on it today, and see if I'm able to finish this wing section. I'm anxious to finish the butterfly now, so I'm going to keep going. Today would have been Mom (Grace's) 91st Birthday. I smile, knowing she'd love seeing me working on this. I wish I could see the look on her face.

I took my "little" embroideries with me for our gathring, and finished another. Five down and more to go. I'll share those photos later. I know I'll be going back to snow next week, so I'm going to enjoy these warm, sunny days while I can.

Happy Heavenly Birthday. I love and miss you, Mom.

Sunday Scripture...

Mom Grace's granddaughter, Kayti gave birth to her first great grandchild last week.
She would be happy that Thanksgiving will now hold a happier memory for her family.
Welcome to the world, Paisley.

Planning A Restful Weekend...

My "Grace" necklace.
Remember that "creative imperative" I'm always telling you about?
Well, I think it's gone on a little break...and taken my sewing mojo along with it.

I'm sure it hasn't gone far - or for too long - but my attention span in the studio is
like that of a four year old. I'm more content right now to dust and rearrange than
actually sit down and make something. That doesn't happen to me very often.
"Grace" and sand dollar charms, with my "lucky" sixpence.
I'm looking forward to enjoying the holiday and taking a little time off.
I'll be posting over the weekend, but I'm going to concentrate on Handsome,
Tag and homekeeping rather than playing in the studio. Maybe we'll head to
the beach or take a little day trip. I'm sure a cookout will be in order for Monday.

I have a knitting project to work on, and perhaps a little handwork, but I won't
be sitting at the sewing machine until next week. I'll grab my camera, like a
good blogger, and I'll be sure to take lots of pictures to share with you.

Labor Day is the last official holiday of summer. If you're anywhere north of
Jacksonville, soon the leaves will turn and there will be a little nip in the air.

We always had a big party this weekend, followed by Labor Day Monday, when
we cleaned up the yard, put away our lawn furniture and prepared for fall and the
inevitable winter that followed. This weekend was always our farewell to summer.

So, have a great weekend, enjoy your time off...and please be safe.
Happy Labor Day Weekend!

Studio Bliss...

I spent most of the day - and part of the evening - in the studio yesterday. I
concentrated on fulfilling my "creative imperative". You know what I mean...
that feeling you get down inside that causes you to spend time doing that
which makes your soul sing. It doesn't matter what it is, but you have to do it.

I'm friends with Gladys Wright Moreno on FaceBook, and while on vacation,
I saw one of her beautiful projects I knew I'd have to try. She linked to her
tutorial, which I promptly viewed, and I was hooked. I only had to pick up
the wool I wanted at Primitive Gatherings - and then get back home to my
huge stash of ephemera to start one of my own. I planned it in my mind the
rest of the trip. (I'll share links to Gladys' blog and tutorial at the end of my post.)
I started with the various bits and bobs I showed you yesterday, but as I began
to play, I realized that my goal would not be to create another needlebook or
sewing kit. Instead, I decided to create a memory book, of sorts, of the things
I love about Wisconsin...time spent in the woods and fields, our dogs, hunting...
You get the idea.
Queen Anne's Lace (or Cow Parsnip or Cow Parsley)
I began by stitching Queen Anne's Lace freehand for my first interior page.
I then joined the pages to the cover (per Gladys' instructions), and set about decorating
each interior page. I fashioned a pocket from a piece of lace, and then I took two
pheasant feathers I had saved from one of my last Wisconsin hunts prior to moving
to Florida. (I stitched them into the pocket so they wouldn't fall out.)

I also added the dog tag that belonged to my Labrador retriever, Bannor, who helped
me harvest that pheasant. Some of my best days outdoors were with my boy, who I still
miss every, single day. I'll likely add his photo, perhaps on fabric, to the pocket, too.
I don't remember where I got the beaded star. It's vintage and labor intense. I
stitched it onto the wool using fine, silk thread. It represents the North Star,
which you can't see here in our southern sky. I plan to stitch grass and fireflies
below it to remind me of those little, blinking lights which used to fill our marsh
on hot July evenings. I'm still thinking my way through the design for now.

I also added beaded flower trim to the half-flap...another nod to the plethora of
wildflowers in the summer landscape. I think that will just stand alone, as is.
Mom Grace taught me how to make granny squares. I made this tiny one in #8
pearl cotton. Not only will it remind me of her and the hours we spent together
crocheting, it will remind me of the many afghans made by my grandmother that I
still have and cherish. Grandma tried to teach me how to make a ripple afghan
and I just couldn't concentrate enough to master the pattern. I now know how to
make them, and she's probably smiling and wondering just what took me so long!

I haven't decided what else will go on this page, so I'll take my time with it. I'll
know when it's right, and then I'll finish that page. This could be an ongoing WIP.
This is what I've done for the front. I had these ribbon flowers and decided
to use them over making my own. You're not surprised to see acorns are you?

Here are the links to Gladys' blog and tutorial for you. If you decide to try this,
I'd love to see what you create. Click HERE to link to her blog...and Click HERE to
view her YouTube "Vintage Needle Book" tutorial for the inspiration for my project.
Her needle books are gorgeous and she also sells them on Etsy under "Collectibles".
Finally, you can click HERE to visit her Etsy shop, gardenofedenlife1. Have
fun browsing her sites. I'm sure you'll agree, her creations will captivate you.

I'll be playing with this on and off all weekend. It's raining most of every
day, so this is just the perfect thing to occupy my time while indoors.
Have a great weekend!

Productive Studio Time...

I finally got back into the studio yesterday!
I had a list of things with deadlines, and
I managed to complete everything on my list.
Yay, me!

We'll be celebrating Joni's Birthday at Coffee Club
on Saturday and my hands are the last to touch her gift
from us. Joni loves ducks - specifically Rubber Ducky -
so choosing her fabric was easy for the girls.

Nora, Kathy, Fay and Brenda assembled the whole quilt.
My tasks were to bind the quilt, add the hanging sleeve and label.
We included Flo's name on the quilt label for all the quilts made in
2013. Because Joni's quilt is actually the last one in this cycle, her
label has Flo's name on it, too. We'll miss Flo for a long time to come.

I can share this with you because Joni doesn't have a computer, tablet
or smart phone. She won't see it until we give it to her Saturday.
No surprises were ruined by sharing this finish with you!
I also finished these cases to take to our Guild meeting last night.
I added velcro to these two cases and they're now finished "sleeves".
The velcro will keep the tablet from slipping out unexpectedly.
I added flaps to these two, so they're finished cases. I wanted to
give the Guild members an idea of what I'm working on. Only
twenty to go! I have until the third week in February to finish the
rest of them. I know that Pat, who is in charge of the Boutique was
really happy to have them, and I know she'll like having more to sell.
Today, I'll be working on Mom's Birthday gift. I'm going to make one of
my sewing organizers for her that will match the armchair pincushion I
gave her for Christmas. She told me she liked the organizer idea last
month, so I'm happy to surprise her with one. I know she'll love it.

I have a full day ahead, so I'd better get back to the studio.
See you tomorrow with a few more finishes.
Wishing you a creative day, my friends.

Spare Moments...

I have to smile when I think of how some things come full circle.
When I first learned needlework, I spent more time with embroideries than
anything else. I created many pieces as I learned my stitches, and Mom Grace
taught me the techniques I came to love in our time together in those early days.

Now, nearly forty years later, I find myself doing what I did then...taking
needle in hand and creating a scene on fabric. This is something that brings
me great satisfaction. I find myself ever grateful to my friend, Loreen, for
suggesting that I teach the quilt class that brought me back to this handwork.
Of course, I'd like to stay ahead of my students, but even so, I find myself
gravitating to my homework to stitch whenever I have a spare moment.

Our next session is on March 28th and I can't wait to see how my students are
progressing with their own pieces. In the meantime, I'll continue to work on
my embroidery and blocks as I look forward that next class.

Slowly, But Surely...

I've been FOCUSING a lot lately and have either finished or nearly finished
a couple more projects. There are few things as satisfying to me as meeting a
deadline or a goal, and this past month has been especially hectic for me.
That's why I'm so darn proud of myself for keeping my shoulder to the wheel
so that I can complete my backlog of UFOs in the near future.

These jammies are my latest accomplishment. They really make me smile!
Today I'll finish this lap quilt. I'm making it for Mom Grace and I just know
she'll love it. First, I know she'll love it because I made it, but I also know
she'll love the sewing-theme fabrics that I chose to make her quilt.
The top is complete and I'll sandwich it with batting and backing and do
the surface quilting. The heart-shaped buttons aren't attached yet either.
I'll add those after the quilting is finished, add the binding and take one
more picture of it to show you before I pop it into a box to mail to her.

One of the things that helps me concentrate is to play music while I'm
in the studio. This song had been playing in my head yesterday, so now
you can have it playing in your head, too! It's ok. You don't have to thank me.

Sunday Scripture...

image that hangs in Grace's home
I have created you and cared for you since you were born.
I will be your God through all your lifetime,
Yes, even when your hair is white with age.
I made you and I will care for you.”

My Newest Valentine...

What a delightful surprise to receive an envelope this week from my friend, Wendy at The Frog Palace!
I opened it to find a fun pink-theme Valentine.
Wendy used part of a dictionary page and made the
definition of "pink" the focal point
Then, she added cutout leaves and a pearly pink button.

Then, she added lots of fab-u-lous vintage buttons and
a length of vintage trim (see top photo).
See those soft pink buttons? They're my favorites, but
I love all of them. Remember that Handsome frequently
calls me "Scrooge McDuck" when I'm playing in my buttons!

Everything surely brightened my day, and I couldn't
stop smiling at her generosity and thoughtfulness.

Thank you, Wendy!
You've got my creative juices flowing, and I can't wait to play!
You'd giggle to see me dancing a little happy dance.
I'll hope you'll visit her blog and leave a note for her to read.

There are emergency travel plans in my near future. I'll know more later today, and I'll tell you more on Monday. Your continued prayers are appreciated.
