It's About Time...

If you've been reading my blog for a while (well, actually a long while), you might remember when I started making these granny squares. (August 2009!) Handsome and I took a long road trip, and I crocheted granny squares while he drove.

I made lots of squares - eighty to be exact - and bordered many of them in a beautiful solid cream color. I had a project in mind when I did them, but they've been sitting in my project bag all this time patiently awaiting my attention.

I decided that I would take my Nantucket Diddy Bag, loaded with all my squares to Panera's last night and try to finish adding the last creamy border to each square. My friend, Krisann asked what was in my bag. I showed her one finished square and she said, "It's been a long time since I've seen you crochet. How many are there?" I proceeded to pull them all of them out of the bag as we counted.

Now, you need to hear Krisann's laughter to know how absolutely joyful it sounds. When she saw how many there were, she just broke up. We all laughed together, as her laugh is so infectious. I had to explain that I had crocheted them all, only in the car, while we were on our 5,000 mile round trip.

I'm not getting back into our vehicle to finish them, but I assure you this project has been on the back burner long enough. Time to wrap up a UFO, don't you think? I haven't been able to sit in the studio to work on my Summertime quilt lately. I'm just too restless to concentrate right now. But finishing this project should be easier.

I'll get to work on completely all the squares and then I'll show you my grandmother's inspiration so you get an idea of where I'm going. (Hint: It's not an afghan.) There is not pattern, but I think I'll be able to finish it with a little help from my crochet mentors Adele, Beula, Tammy and Krisann. More pictures soon, I promise.

  2. I haven't crocheted in years! I'm more a visual person than read-the-directions (I usually sit down with someone who shows me what they mean and I write the directions down for me LOL)
I remember, though, as a teenager taking my crocheting with me on a long trip. Sitting in the front seat as my dad drove... somehow (honestly, I don't know how!) there was yarn caught up in the air conditioning vents! When my dad sold the vehicle years later he was still pulling strands out!!! I'm looking forward to your finished pics.

  4. I have some squares too, I am using any scraps of wool I have, even old cardigans I have unpicked. Its a long process but eventually it will be a blanket. My Mum did one, which now my niece has. Looking forward to seeing your finished project.

  7. Donna, I can't wait to see the project complete! I'm sure it will be wonderful just like all your other beautiful things!! My great grandmother made an afghan out of granny squares for all her grandsons (one being my father) wives. That is 4 in all. She made them all different colors and outlined each square in black. My Mom still has that afghan saved in the hope chest that was my great grandmothers!

  10. Verrrrry Intresssssting! All those squares and not an afghan. I am guessing a shawl. What else could you turn 80 squares into. Hmmm. Give us a hint!!

I love to crochet. Its my transitional craft, transition from fall to winter. The time when you can't be warm outside, can't get focused sewing and brood over the change in season. Its a very mind occupying craft, yet allows you to chat while you work.
BTW, I like the yarn color.

  13. I adore your granny squares in those soft creamy colors. I love to crochet and yes my Grandma taught me how to make lots of patterns and things. I do not have a clue what you will do with these if not an afghan and 80 squares would make a really large pillow. It will feel so good to complete your granny square project. Happy crocheting...

  14. Not an afghan??? I remember learning to crochet from an elderly lady in our neighborhood. My friend and I went to her apartment and she taught us the joy of crochet. Still crocheting 40 years later.
