They're Called Apple Pears...

Have you heard of these before today? They're called "Apple Pears". Handsome and I hit the local Sam's Club and I spied these in the produce department.

They looked like apples and they smelled like pears. I love pears and was intrigued by these fruits, so into the cart they went! I expected the texture of apples with the taste of pears, and couldn't wait to get them home to wash one and take a big bite!
There were six in a box, each nestled in these little "apple pear cozies". They're foamy, stretchy and white. Veeerry interesting. I'm thinking about how I can repurpose them to put them to use in the studio. Anyone with any ideas?
But, girlfriends...Look at the fabulous box they came in! It has the most wonderful, colorful art on the outside. It reminds me of the old-time fruit crates I used to see in produce markets. Of course, this one is cardboard with a slick outer surface, but I can see it working in the studio, too.
I'm thinking that my rolls of seam binding would fit just perfectly in here. I'll be pulling out all of the rolls today to see if they fit.

Now, back to the apple pears...If you like a sort of mealy texture, with moist but rather tasteless fruit, then go ahead and purchase a few to try. As for me...they have none of the positive qualities of either apples or pears, and although I won't let them go to waste, I won't purchase them again (unless I can't live without another box!). Then, I'll share the fruit with a neighbor! lol
I hope you've planned a picnic or gathering with family or friends today. Our sweet friend, Ellen D., is going to join Handsome and me for dinner at our home. Ellen lives alone, and her daughter lives up North, so we're really looking forward to sharing a meal with her. Celebrate family and friends as you enjoy an extra day off today. Happy Labor Day!

  1. I first had these 'apple pears' in Japan, of course couldn't read the language so had no idea what I was actually eating :-) They tasted so amazing there. Finally found them here and they are tasteless, I was so disappointed. If they had come in such pretty packaging I might have been happier.

  2. That's a first for me Donna. You sound just like me though thinking what cute little foamy things and they have to be good for something. I love old fruit crates. They had such beautiful artwork and this one's a keeper too.

Enjoy your labor day. Hugs...Tracy :)

  4. Hey Donna,
My boys love them some 'pear apples' being 5 they get thier words mixed up. They are yummy. I've only bought them at our grocery store, not in that cool box. Leave it to you to be all green with it. LOL I'm going to sams today to buy some in the crate. It would be excellent for holding papers, or hand towels in a bathroom. Have a great holiday. Lisa

  5. I've seen them but never tried one and now I probably won't LOL Mealy isn't my thing - nothing worse that biting into a beautiful apple and having it be mealy.

  6. Now you've got me interested. I'll look for some. I made apple butter and pear butter this summer. Wonder what these would taste like made into fruit butter?

  7. I too thought they sounded wonderful. The fruit I bought did not come in this cute little box and they were costly$$. Did not care for them either.

  10. Love the fun box but I don't think I would like the fruit. Hope the rolls of seam binding fit for you. Dinner and visiting with your friend sounds like a wonderful way to spend a holiday. Safely to all...

  11. Hi Donna, It is not a fruit that I would try, but I do like the box or crate whichever you prefer to call it. It would work really well in your sewing room. We have had a leisure breakfast at our favorite homecooked restaurant this morning. The homemade wheat toast was so good. They make all of their breads and cinnamon rolls, which makes it so good. Of course the 25 cent cup of coffee with refills made it nice. I am going to spend a leisure day of doing whatever "me" feels like. You have a wonderful day. Your Missouri Friend.

  12. So, what you're saying is....buy 'em for the box, right? ;-)

Oh, and the cute little cosies, too.

    Yep, I'd do that!

Bummer about the taste though-they sound like they would be so yum. Maybe they were duds.

  16. I think you could shape/taper and glitter the little protective "sleeves" Donna and make some fun crowns! Well, you know me, my head is always in the creative stars!

The box IS awesome though! LOL
