Tag's Brother, Trip...

Tag's brother, Trip on the left, and Tag on the right.

This post is long overdue, but was set aside during my anniversary giveaway week. I didn't want to wait any longer to share it with you.

I only know one of the other puppies from Tag's litter. That's his brother, Trip who went to live with our dear friends, Doug and Marion in Michigan. I've written about them before, sharing photographs of us together in Florida, Michigan, and then here at the farmhouse after we moved back to Wisconsin.

Marion and I frequently shared conversations about our two lowriders, comparing notes about their personalities and antics. Even after Tag left us, she would tell me stories about Trip with their old Labrador, Nicky - and after Nicky's passing - their new Lab mix, Gibbs.

Trip went on walkabout when he was young and was hit by a car in their neighborhood. The only lasting injury from that accident was that he became deaf. As many Corgis prefer not to listen anyway (at least that was true with Tag), it didn't seem to bother him after he got used to it. He was living a happy life with the best family.

Marion grieved with me when Tag lost control of his back legs and we knew it was his time. They've been in our place before, having to make that hardest, most unselfish decision, so they knew what we went through.

Trip Walter

In mid-March this year, I had a phone conversation with Marion. Trip was having a harder time getting around and she felt his time was getting toward "his time". She repeated that she never dreamed Trip, with new health issues in his later years would outlive Tag, but here we were.

On March 22nd, I received a text. All it said was, "It's done". I knew she wouldn't be up for an immediate call, so we texted back and forth for a while through tears, promising to talk on the phone when she was ready. When she called about a week later, hoping that she and I could talk without crying, she told me that - just like Tag - he just completely lost control of his back legs.

While many people with dogs that face this issue put them into wheeled carts so they can walk and run using their front legs, that's just something that Marion, our spouses and I agreed we'd never do with our dogs. They both became incontinent with their condition, so we both saw the downside of them using the carts. The agonizing decision was made to let Trip go. He lived just past a year longer than my boy.

We ended our conversation in tears, and promised to talk again soon about other things. My comfort is two-fold. One, that our brothers are playing together again, and two, that we have great faith that we'll see them when it's our time. I've said more than once, "If my dogs (and all pets) aren't going to meet me in Heaven, then I ain't going".

So, dammit, here I am in tears again as I write this post. People who know me, know that I miss my boy every day. Every day. The tears and emotion are never far from the surface, so it's no surprise that I'm bawling again. I guess that's a good thing, right? I loved him so much, that my grief is an expression of the depth of my love. Tomorrow would have been Tag's fourteenth Birthday. I promise to remember him, but I won't be writing about him tomorrow. I wouldn't do that to you two days in a row. I'll write about something creative instead. He'd understand.

Sorry if you're in tears, too, as you read this. Honestly it wasn't my intention. I only wanted to honor the life and loss of his brother. Run free, Trip. I hope you and Tag (and the rest of your litter who may be with you) snuggle up every night and wait for us at The Bridge. Until then, know you're loved and missed.

I'm taking a deep breath now and pulling myself together. I worked my six hours yesterday, but Handsome and I went back to work after 8 pm last night. There was an incident after I clocked out that left the cashier on the night shift rattled. We only live three miles away, so we decided to go back up and stay at the store with her until her shift was over.

My boss had told me if I did that to clock back in, and I don't feel right clocking in for two hours without doing anything, so I worked scrubbing in the kitchen. (As an aside: When I saw the doctor this week, he put me on medication to help my knee.)

I tackled the food warmer and the pans that needed to be cleaned from the day's use sparkling clean. As I was banging metal pans around in the stainless sink, Handsome came in and said, "You know why you're doing this, right?" I said, "Sure. I can't just sit still on the clock." He laughed and replied, "No. It's the prednisone." I laughed. I hadn't realized it, but I guess he was right. Steroids can really amp you up. At least that's what's happened to me. Also, unlike many, rather than making me hungry. They take away my appetite. I just get busy.

Anyway, the rest of the evening was uneventful, except that the weather turned crappy and we ended up coming home in a driving snowstorm that turned to high winds and rain beating against the farmhouse overnight. Gotta love Wisconsin springs.

Thanks for reading this far today. I admit it's kind of a roller coaster ride. Today, I'm going to finish up the last of the giveaway gifts that have yet to be posted. These last few will mail tomorrow, so if you haven't received yours yet, you will soon. I'm going to have a coffee now, and get my act together. Talk about a Hump Day!

Tuesdays With Tag - Our Prayer Request...

My "Artsy Fartsy" Portrait

 Hi, Everybody!

Are you gettin' ready for Christmas yet? Boo, The Kid and I are bein' especially good these days. We know Santa's on his way!

Mom and I took a drive yesterday to see Mom's sister who had a recent surgery and is havin' a rough time of it. She's been pretty sick for a long time, and Mom wanted to visit her. I rode along to keep Mom company, and then waited in the car until she came back out. When Mom got back to the car, she told me that we need to pray hard for her sister every night.

My brother, Trip is havin' a rough time, too. His symptoms are lookin' like DM (it's like Lou Gehrig's Disease in Corgis), and we're prayin' hard for him, too. He's my full brother, and I really liked hangin' out with him when we visited him in Michigan at Aunt Marion's house.

If you have any extra time as you're gettin' ready for the holidays, we'd sure appreciate you joinin' our prayer chain for Mom's sister and Trip. God will know who you're talkin' about.

I'm not gonna try to be funny or yammer on today. I'm headin' back to sit next to Mom and keep her company. I know I can be a butt-head sometimes, but I can be a good, true-blue boy when I need to be. I can tell when Mom needs me, and I don't want to let her down. Thanks for understandin'.

I'll see you again in seven. 'til then...

Tuesdays With Tag - A Dog's Life...

Hi, everybody!
I'm sure you've heard the term "A Dog's Life" before.
Now that it's gettin' warm around south Florida again, I thought we
should revisit my favorite part of this dog's life...my daily pool time!!
Every afternoon now, I bug Mom or Dad until someone finally gets the
message to head to the pool with me. Unlike Fezzik who I'm told didn't
mind going swimmin' on his own, I prefer the company of my "peeps".
Before I can go in the water, there's the mandatory Mad Dash around the
pool...two laps minimum. I gotta run as fast as I can and get jazzed to jump!
When I get a really good "lean" on the curves, Dad calls me his "Racin'
Pig". He says that's how the racin' pigs in the State Fair races make turns!
So I run and run like a fool until my tongue hangs out...
and Dad or Mom start to laugh and then...
BAM! I jump in the pool and jump off the edge of the shelf.
You gotta give me points for style, right?
I don't need one of those goofy life vests either.
I've got the dog paddle down to an art.
I can swim super fast when I need to keep up with Dad, too!
(It's just another one of my super corgi powers. hee hee)
Finally, there's my fine form exitin' the pool to start all over again.
I think it's a really good thing we don't have a divin' board.
I might be an Olympic Corgi then!

I know. I got it rough. Reeeeeal rough.
Actually, I know what a Lucky Dog I really am.
I want to tell you somethin' serious before I close this week.
A few of you have asked how my brother, Trip is doing.
I thought you might appreciate an update.
This is Trip from last summer.
Trip's leg is healin' and so are his abrasions. That's all really
great news, but there's one thing that I'm a little worried about.
Because of his head injury from the accident, and the dangerous amount
of anesthesia he received while in the emergency clinic, he's deaf right now.

Mom, Dad and I are prayin' that this is only a temporary condition and that
his hearing will come back again when he's healed. My Aunt Marion is so sad
thinkin' that he might never hear her voice or other sounds again.

We would like to ask all of you to say a little prayer that he heals completely,
including his hearing. I want him to be able to hear me barkin' my skull
off next time we frap and play around at his house in Michigan together.
We believe in the power of prayer and just know that all our prayers can help.
Thanks.

I'll be back next week with more adventures and I'll update more about
my brother as I get news. 'til then, please give your pets an extra hug and
remember...

Prayers, Please...

Michigan Summer 2012 l-r: Marion, Trip, Tag and me
Happy May Day, friends.
I don't usually publish two dog posts in a week, but this week is an exception.

Yesterday, I got a phone call from my dear friend, Marion. She owns Tag's brother, Trip. He was hit by a car last Friday and suffered a broken leg and head trauma. His left back leg was broken between the ankle and knee so he was cast at the emergency vet's office on Friday evening.

Unfortunately, the cast isn't staying in place, so he's having another surgery this morning under the expert hands of his regular vet. They're going to install a "Thomas splint". My understanding is that this splint is somehow secured over his back to help keep it in place, and it will help him heal more effectively.

Although he was pretty beaten up and traumatized, he was alert at the vet's office yesterday and he has a good prognosis. I'm sure you can imagine how upset Marion and her husband are over the awful events of the day on Friday. It was a hit and run, so the person driving the car that hit him never bothered to stop.

Trip is a wonderful, sweet boy and not only a companion to Marion and Doug, but also a companion to their black Lab, Nicky. Nicky suffers with seizures and recently Trip has alerted them to the onset of Nicky's seizures before they start. He has a "different vocalization" when the event is imminent.

Handsome and I were so worried when we heard the news, but we just know that Trip is going to be alright. We're saying prayers for his complete healing, and ask that you lift a prayer or good thought with ours.

I promise I'll update you on his condition as I hear more from Marion. Accidents happen in the blink of an eye - even when we do our best to avoid them. If you have a pet, hug him or her a little tighter today.

We love you, Marion, Doug and Trip. Everything is going to be just fine. I know there will be lots of prayers for the little guy from people you don't even know. (I have great friends that way!) We'll look forward to seeing all of you very soon.

P.S. Thanks for all the cute remarks you left for Tag. JJ Pumpernickel Adams contacted Tag on Facebook yesterday and promised to hold our feet to the fire. "No more humiliating the corgi and restitution required for past offenses". (sigh) I guess we're going to have to be much more careful in the future. (I'm still giggling, though. I mean, it was funny, after all.)

Tuesdays With Tag - Family Time...

 Hi, Everybody!
It's been such a great Thanksgiving weekend you won't believe it.
I just have to tell you all about what I've been doin'.

Mom said that Aunt Marion and Uncle Doug were comin' to visit,
but I just didn't believe her until I actually saw them comin' up my driveway.
Next thing I knew, Aunt Marion was sittin' on the curb and sayin',
"Here, Tag!" in that sweet, chirpy voice that I love so darn much!
I couldn't help myself...I just bolted to give her some special corgi lovin'.
She giggled when she saw me.
Isn't she just so darn cute?
I had to show her how I learned to FLY since the last time I saw her.
Believe me. She was impressed!!!
Then, I just had to lie down and show her how big I got...
and tell her what I've been up to since the last time I saw her.
Aunt Marion brought Uncle Doug with her, but she left my brother,
Trip and their our black Labrador, Nicky at home. They sure are
missin' their daily Corgi Fix, but I'll take care of that while they're here.
I love that we're all family.
We all picked each other and love spendin' time with each other.
That's what family's all about, right?

This visit is gonna be waayyy too short, but we understand.
They have to get back to their dogs, and they're missin' their
grandkids, too. No kiddin'. I miss our grandkids every day!
Mom and Dad are especially happy. They really enjoy sittin' around and
catchin' up on all the latest news. Our visits are always too short,
so I've gotta go enjoy our time together while I can. They'll be gone
before I can wag my tail, and I'll start missin' them again right away.
So, I hope you won't mind terribly if I cut our Tuesday visit short this week.
I want to catch up on passin' out a few wet willies, snuggles, play times and
all-round snuffling before Aunt Marion and Uncle Doug have to go.

Next time I see them, I'll get to see my brother again, and that's always awesome.
'til then...

Tuesdays With Tag - He's My Brother...

It's me again. Tag!
Bet you've been waiting to see me all week, right?
Well, this week, I'd like to formally introduce you to my brother, Trip.

Here he is.
Can you tell we're related?
I hadn't seen him since last year, but we sure made up for lost time!

Here we are together...from the front. That's him on the left and I'm the handsome one on the right. (Please excuse the "schnozzled up" windows. That's was Trip's fault. Not mine!)

We got to spend something Mom called "Quality Time" together on the deck. If you ask me, I think we were missing all the good gossip between her and Aunt Marion!

We were always glad to see Trip's dad when he got back home at the end of the day. We liked telling him all about our day. (That's my butt on the left and Trip's on the right.)

Sometimes we just frapped around the house together, and one day we took a long walk and actually saw CHICKENS! We were on leashes so we couldn't chase them, but we sure thought about it.

And sometimes, Trip just sat and looked all moony-eyed at Mom.  He's a real Casanova, this guy. He liked to stand on his hind legs and kiss MY mom! Every time he did that, I ran over and stood on HIM. The nerve of this guy!

Mom giggled and said, "He's so sweet. Why don't you give Momma kisses, too, Tag?" Right! I've got a reputation to uphold, after all. I'm glad Trip's not around all the time. I'd have to learn to get mushy just to keep up with him!
We also spent time playing around with Trip's other brother, Nick. Nicky had all the corgi he could handle while we were together, but I secretly think he's missing all the hoopla now that his life is back to normal. He got lots of attention from Mom and Dad, too. They like Labradors almost as much as they like me!
I was pretty lucky to get to spend time with THREE great Labs over the past few weeks. (Nelson, Duncan and Nick!) Of course, they were lucky to get to spend time with me, too!
This is how we ended most days. Trip sacked out on the floor, and me sacked out on Trip! We had a great time together and I can hardly wait to see him again. He's just my size!

See you again next week!
'til then,
"More Waggin' and Less Barkin'!"

Beautiful Faces...

Faces from our Wisconsin trip. Faces we love. Faces we'll be missing. Faces we hope to see again very soon. Not all of the faces from our trip are seen here. Busy schedules. Visits without my trusty camera. Loved and missed all the same. Cherished images of those faces burned in my mind. Beautiful faces.

Saturday Road Trip...

Saturday morning at 8 o'clock, my friends, Netta and Monica hopped into my Explorer and the three of us headed to Orlando to the CHA Craft Show. A quick three hours later, we had parked the car and walked across the lot to the Orange County Convention Center. I say "quick" because we hadn't been together for a while and were catching up during the drive.

Before we knew it, we were entering the show with our eyes open wide before all the displays. I've done trade shows and needleworker events before - both as a vendor and as a buyer - but that first sight of a show in full swing is always awe-inspiring.

We were quickly engulfed in a sea of humanity, all scurrying about for Make & Take workshops, vendor lectures, giveaways and demonstrations. We decided that it might be best for us to split up for a couple of hours and then meet at a designated time near the entry to grab a bite to eat. After our tasty repast, and comparison of shopping bag contents, we again set off for the vendor booths.

Many of the vendors were focused on products for knitting, scrapbooking and stamping, and I managed to find a few unique items that would suit my purposes. A booth run by Bello Modo (The Beautiful Way) from Olympia, Washington had these beautiful wire lace ribbons. They are tubular, so you can slip beads or other embellishments into them. They can be pulled lengthwise or widthwise and they retain their new shape to add a beautiful sparkle and a lacy effect to just about anything. You can see they come in many different colors, and they make up into beautiful jewelry!

Right on the counter next to the ribbon display was this beautiful necklace using first, a pendant with charms, then adding pearls inserted into the ribbon, alternating with spacers and dangles outside the ribbon. It was finished with a length of silver chain and a clasp at each end of the ribbon. I was intrigued enough to purchase about 6 different 1 yard lengths in a half inch width. I can't wait to play with it.

We left the show with bags full of information, free patterns, make & take projects - and feet a little sore. We stopped in Sarasota for a bite to eat and then headed home with our booty.

As I write this on Saturday night, I know that tonight my dreams will be filled with the sights and sounds of market, along with ideas cooking in my head just waiting for the right time to come forward in the studio. Tomorrow is going to be fun! Sweet Dreams.
