I Have A Question...

Last fall, our quilt guild had a sale for the members. At that sale, I found a package of finished quilt blocks that had been created by the guild members prior to my becoming a member. They all have the color "green" in common. There were a total of 54 blocks and they're all beautiful. I'm looking forward to creating a quilt with them, and I think the members would love to see them all assembled.

Here's my question...The blocks in the photo are a good representation of all the varieties of green included in the assortment. I'm having a difficult time choosing a color for the sashing and border(s). What color would you choose? I have a beautiful orange batik that really makes the colors pop. I have plenty of ivory, cream or tan prints, but I'm concerned that they would be a little blah. Perhaps a yellow? Brown? I even have a batik that incorporates a lot of the colors (toward purples) like the leafy square you see right behind the "Brynwood" of my watermark in the photo. arghhh! Help!

Choosing color can be a satisfying step. Usually, I can get a feel for the colors I want to use through the process of actually creating the blocks. In this case, that part has already been done for me, so I'm struggling with the next step. I'm interested to see what your thoughts are.

  1. How true is that! Jumping into the process half-way isn't easy but you know whatever you do will be wonderful.
I like the idea of the orange, but am also wondering if a dark in the green or teal range might work - one of these deep rich batiks that is somewhere in-between... it's so hard to say without actually seeing it. Good luck!

  2. Well since I like Earth tones I think I would go with something in the tan or brown family..Maybe if you lay some of the colors you mentioned next to the blocks we could get a better idea..Like a picture of each one? How does that sound for an idea for us to help you? :)

  3. I think a black would be great...it makes a statement. I had a small stash of vintage mix colors and used black to finish the quilt. It was beautiful. So beautiful that when our home was broken into...they took cameras, computer, and my quilt!

Good luck! Please show us your finished project.
    Have a great weekend!

  4. I was going to say go with the yellow or orange either would be awesome but then you threw the purple batik in the mix and I started leaning toward that!!!! I can see your dilemma. I can hardly wait to see what you end up choosing!

  5. Tan if you want calm.
    Orange if you want pop.
Purple if you want totally different.
    Are you still confused? hee,hee,hee.

  6. What is the feeling of the group: Wild and adventurous or Tried and true? My choice would be purple but that is safe...Orange would Pop. Whatever you chose, will be perfect...

  7. It is hard to jump into a project mid-stream. You don't know the vision the creators of the blocks had. I vote for black.

I would love to see all the colors you mention...lol, can't decide but I like the idea of a bit of orange to bring the warm idea of summer a bit closer!
