A Little Message From The Universe...

So, I've lost my favorite (sharp and fine) seam ripper. I've been looking for it for almost a week! One minute it was there, the next - poof! - it was gone. It's brass, with a brass case. I have the needle threader to match (which I never use). Of course, I couldn't lose the needle threader. The photo shows the complete needle threader, and my lonesome case for the seam ripper.

How does this happen? I've even gone through the waste basket that sits next to my cutting table, thinking it might have dropped off the edge into the bin. I've decided that I don't like "dumpster diving" ...and, nope, it wasn't there either.
When things like this happen, there are some pretty interesting exchanges around here. (In the mode of Sophia Petrillo on Golden Girls... "Picture it. North Port, July, 2010.")...I'm in the studio. On all fours. Trying to see under my sewing cabinet. (My seam ripper could be under there!) Butt in the air, facing the door.

Handsome, standing in the doorway: "Oh, hello." (I know he's smiling without even having to look up!)

Me, still looking under the cabinet: "Hiya."

Handsome: "What are you doing?"

Me: "Looking for my seam ripper." (I'm also running my hand under the cabinet in case the seam ripper has become invisible.)

Handsome: "Under there?" (I think he's giggling.)

Me, now I'm giggling, too: "Uh, huh. Have you seen it?"

Handsome: "I don't even know what a seam ripper is."

Me, looking over my shoulder and trying really hard not to sound sarcastic: "It's for ripping out mistakes in my sewing."
(I know, you're really surprised, right? "Donna makes sewing mistakes?" Trust me. It happens fairly frequently.)

Handsome: "Is it under there?"

Me, checking one more time: (sigh) "Nooooo." (using my best "frustrated" voice.)

Handsome: "Uh, Ok. I'll be in the other room, then." (as he turns and walks away.)

Me, finally turning around: "I could really use some help getting back up."

Too late, Handsome has left the studio. It's ok. I can do it myself. Hang on a minute. Do they make grab bars for studios? I'll have to look into that.

I still haven't found my seam ripper. While you're at it, have you seen the sweet, tulle drawstring bags I bought for holding my strawberry roses...or the set of six, vintage berry bowls I brought back from Wisconsin last fall? I seem to have a black hole somewhere in the studio. Things have gone in there, never to be seen again. Perhaps, the Universe is trying to tell me that I need to empty those cabinets and start over with transparent storage? Or perhaps, Shell needs to come to Florida to help me purge, sort and re-organize. I have to go now. I haven't given up hopes of finding my seam ripper. If you need me, I'll be in the studio.

My two quilts are posted as part of my De-Stash Along 2010 projects with Missy from Crafting with Cat Hair. She has set up a Flickr album for all the participants here.

I took a sewing break on Sunday. I really did tidy up the studio, still searching for my lost treasures. At this rate, I'll be able to hide my own Easter eggs next spring!

  1. Hi Donna,

    Did you check your pockets???

That's my husband's black hole, so I just thought I'd ask.......LOL. Yes, they do make grab bars for everywhere because I have em' or else need them everywhere. I have to plan ahead in the event that I decide to get down to the ground, so I make sure there are plenty of people around me to not only help me back up, but make sure they video tape it and get it out on YouTube A.S.A.P. Stay out of trouble missy and stay upright and you'll never have a problem.....;o)

    Hugs,
    Meri

  2. Amusingly put!
My MiL swears by St. Anthony. If she's lost something, she prays to St. Anthony and claims to find whatever it is very soon after. Give it a shot - can't do any harm. xx

  3. Oh the things that get lost in a busy studio! I'm in the process of moving mine to a bigger room...every move reveals hidden treasures from the past!
Good luck finding your treasure! ;)

  4. Isn't that the most frustrating thing? I sure hope you find it - you will, you know. It will be when you stop looking for it. One day it will appear.

  5. Nothing will make you clean up more, than losing a treasured item. Of course you know you will find it, in the last place you look! Bad joke, I know. Now, with this talk of destashing, do you think I could send you a prepaid postage box that you could just throw that stuff in and send it my way? I hope you find the seam ripper soon, it is frustrating not to be able to find something you know is there, SOMEWHERE!

  6. Oh that drives me crazy! I use to be able to retrace my steps and remember. Now my memory won't allow that anymore either! I usually find things wrapped up in the fabric I was using. Hopefully it's not stuck in your quilt that went off to be quilted!!! Yikes!
I would love to come help you organize. I'm afraid thought that we would end up playing and laughing so much that we wouldn't get anything done. ;)

    Hugs!

  7. Sometimes it comes to me in my sleep, I wake up and remember where I put that "lost" item. It is so frustrating to lose something you know was "just" here.

  8. By the way, love your blog background! I wish I could find some fabric like that!

  9. Oh, Donna, I hope you find it. I know how frustrating that is. I remember years ago I had put the ring my mother gave me for graduation in a "safe" place which at the moment I did it I thought, not a good place, I'll forget where I put it AND I did. I never found it again and of course thereh have been numerous moves since them . . . .

  10. I am convinced that I have gremlins lurking about...perhaps you have some in your studio also.
I have not seen such a nice seam ripper and needle threader. Do you mind if I ask where you found that set?
Good will hunting. (could not resist)

  11. I loved the Golden Girls reference! Lol! I also have a black hole in my home. I searched for days for my favorite scissors, one of my telephones disappeared over a year ago never to be found (I'm fairly certain it fell into a donation box I was filling)... There are days I feel my poor mind is really slipping. Thanks for making me smile today!

  12. Oh Donna I so have the visual of you on all fours and Mr. Handsome enjoying it. :o)
Just buy another seam ripper and then your lost one will magically appear as that is how it happens around here.
I do hope you find it soon. And when you do seal up that black hole gap. Happy creating...

If you go and buy a new seam ripper your other one will magically appear. At least that is what happens here.
    Happy creating...

  14. Good luck with your hunting! Um ... I wouldn't bank on the fact that you could find the eggs! Just stick to hoping you can find all the stuff you "put away for safe keeping" before Easter! =)

  16. Donna you are too funny loved your humor in losing your seam ripper with "Handsome" looking on...isn't it strange how things like that happen my oldest grandson lost a tooth here at my house last week we put it on the cupboard he showed papaw when he got home left it there when it was time to go home the tooth was gone and never to be seen again????
    Hugz
    p.s. hope you find it!!

  18. Oh yes...prayers to St. Anthony always work for me!

I think you should ask Handsome to go to Auto Zone or any other car parts store & buy you a collapsible magnetic wand. Guys use them for picking up dropped screws down inside of engines but they are marvelous tools in the sewing room too. Finding dropped needles is my favorite use but I bet it would locate your seam ripper just as quickly.

Did you try shining a flashlight when it get to evening time? The light just might glint off the metal & help it to jump out at you in the dimness.
That's all I got...sorry! Hope it turns up soon.
