Wouldn't It Be Nice?...

Comfy Claudette

...to just lie around all day, have someone bring your meals to you, and not have a care in the world? Oh, wait. Didn't I just spend weeks doing that while I healed my new knee? Granted, I was healing from surgery, but the rest of it definitely isn't all it's cracked up to be!

While this lump slept on a favorite spot on the sofa, Handsome and I were occupied washing windows and doing our fall farmhouse cleaning. The weather was perfect for it, even though the temperatures are already starting to drop. It is October, after all.

This morning I have a little pressure canning to do, but I'm going to stitch again this afternoon. I found chicken breasts on sale at our favorite store in Plymouth - about sixteen really meaty ones - for around twenty dollars. I couldn't pass up that deal, so today, I'm going to can them for the pantry for this winter.

Last night, I made a hearty chicken noodle soup using Amish noodles I picked up at the market near my brother's last weekend. They're wider and longer than usual egg noodles, and were perfect for the soup. I made homemade buttermilk biscuits as a side. I had three quarts of soup left over, so I'm going to take a quart up the hill, and another quart to Mum and my stepdad's, so they can enjoy it, too.

Well, it's time to make coffee. Handsome will give each of the big girls their yard workouts, and then I'll bring out the canning supplies again. This time of year, I don't bother to take things downstairs or out to the cabinets in the barn. Most everything stays stacked in the kitchen to save steps. I'll put everything away again after I finish preserving for the fall. Today is not that day. I'll share the rest of my canning list with you soon, and see you tomorrow!

  1. Don't we wish we could be like that kitty and lead a life of sloth. But wait - I know us well enough to know we'd be beyond bored in a matter of hours (or, in my case, more like minutes). We spent most of our time away in t-shirts because the weather was so warm. I'm crossing my fingers that it lasts for a good long time yet.

    1. Hi MA:
You and I are much alike in that regard. I've learned I pretty much have to be drugged in order to just sit and do nothing. I didn't like that one single bit! Our weather has been gorgeous lately. Cool at night for sleeping, and wonderfully sunny and warm during the day. I could stay this way until April as far as I'm concerned! We must enjoy it while we can, because I know what's just around the corner. sigh

  2. Oh it's so good to see that little sweetie.
I'm sure it doesn't seem like it to you, but for me your knee surgery was a mere blip on the screen (you're rolling your eyes, right?) and you just jumped right back into your everyday life. That might be a stretch but you just didn't skip a beat. And those pantry shelves thought they were going to get a rest.
We got a decent bit of rain, it's getting cooler and frost tomorrow night, with showers over the
weekend. Sounds like stitching weather to me.

    1. Hi Shirley:
She was mad at me this morning (for all of about ten minutes) because I pinned her down (wrapped in one of my blankets) so I could trim her front claws. She stalked off all in a huff, but we rubbing up against my legs as I did my hair. All was forgiven, I guess. You're right. I realized yesterday that I really don't hurt anymore, even though I don't yet have full "bendage" in my knees. That's okay. I know it will come, but in the meantime, I'm feeling much more comfortable as I go about my day. Our farm neighbor planned everything perfectly - as he always does. Took off the soybeans, scraped the surface of the field, planted, and that very night it rained. I swear he's clairvoyant. Enjoy your weekend, dear. Thanks again for stopping by.

  3. Looks like Claudette did a great job supervising your fall cleaning from her comfy perch on the sofa. She managed to soak in some rays, too. That's true multitasking. 😉

    1. Hi Lois:
She sure did! I had to laugh tonight. The girls usually only get to "cat around" outside during the day if they bolt the door. I make them wait until dark to protect the birds that stop by to visit. In the process of cleaning the dining room windows and putting up the one storm window that needed to be reinstalled, I moved the small table I'd been using for my water bath canner away from that side of the porch. At night, Claudette usually jumped up on that or a chair that was sitting there, and then she beat on the screen to let me know when she wanted to come back in. Last night, without a table or chair to get level with the window and screen, she still managed to beat on the it by hopping up and down from the porch floor. I laughed out loud when I realize she figured out how to give me her "bat signal" without the usual perches. Of course, Crystal stayed out another hour or so before deciding it was time to come home for the night. She's my "wild child". sigh So it goes around the farmhouse. I hope you have a great weekend!

    1. Hi Marilyn:
Beef barley soup sounds delicious, too! mmmm mmmm I guess we were on the same page yesterday. All the harvesting going on around us makes for some dusty tables, etc. around here. The outside of our windows were certainly ready for a washing. I'm sure the light level increased considerably after they were cleaned. lol
      Have a great weekend, dear.
