Too Soon For This!...

In Otter News - Steve's Not Ready For Christmas

I've been seeing too many photographs on Facebook of friends who already have their Christmas trees up! Not here. We wait until after Thanksgiving. Heck there were Christmas ads before Halloween. That's just nuts! I want to celebrate each holiday separately, and not smush them all together. Maybe it's just me.

I didn't go to the mailbox after I got home from work. It was rainy, then slushy, then snowy, then rainy all day, so when Handsome picked me up after my shift, all I wanted to do was get in the house, change clothes and take a quick nap. That's just what I did, but upon looking at my mail notifications, I see that the jelly roll to complete my bluebirds is in the mailbox. I'll get it in a few minutes.

My plan for today is to finish stitching feathers and start the process to turn my piece into a quilted wall hanging. I'll show you how far I get tomorrow.

Our monthly classmate dinner is today, so I may not likely won't get to the actual quilting until tomorrow. Just a few more days won't hurt anything, except that I'm as anxious to complete it as you are to see it!

I'd better get busy or I surely won't make much progress. Happy Hump Day! See you tomorrow.

  1. I'm totally with Steve! Although, I will admit we hung our lights on the outside of the house this past weekend...with strict instructions to my hubby that they do not actually get turned on until after Thanksgiving. Just trying to spread out the decorating so it's not overwhelming...hubby is not ready to cut back yet... waiting until we can no longer cart them up and down from the attic. 😊 Now, back to focusing on that turkey dinner. Enjoy your day, and I can't wait to see your bluebird quilt progess!

    1. Hi Lois:
Hanging the lights early is a good idea, especially if there's every chance the alternative is hanging them in subzero weather with snow up to one's "hoohaa". lol We should do that soon, too. I won't contemplate a tree until after Thanksgiving, but now I keep seeing photos of cats in or knocking down trees, which has me in a quandary about putting one up at all. I'm fortunate that these two girls don't get on countertops, but I don't want them doing outside things inside if I put up an artificial tree. sigh I think this next year, I'll be planning to get everything down from the attic. I don't like trying to cart things up and down either. The basement isn't much easier. I've put all my empty canning jars and other supplies in the pole barn (it's got lots of shelves and a cement floor, so it's not too "rustic", and it's much easier to haul in and out from there than up and down stairs. I saw a video today about pressure cooking a turkey from frozen and then canning the meals. I'm going to try that. I think I may also roast a bird a day or two before Thanksgiving, so I'm not spending the whole day in the kitchen. Then, there are the bluebirds, which I hope to complete stitching today. Wish me luck!

  2. It's not just you, I don't like that all the stores put Holiday merchandise out so early before the previous Holiday is over.
Have fun at your classmate dinner.
We had a dusting of snow last night.

    1. Hi Marilyn:
Had fun again with old friends. Most years I just bypass the entire holiday sections unless I go with a specific thing in mind. Even so, I wish they'd wait for Thanksgiving until Halloween has passed, and likewise with Christmas. My brain can't always process all that like it used to, but I don't think everything was so rushed thirty or forty years ago. We got "thick rain" yesterday, but nothing stuck. I'm perfectly happy to wait for snow until Christmas Eve, thank you very much. lol Stay warm!

  3. Not being ready for today - that's me on most days! I won't be hauling out our Christmas 'stuff' until at least mid-December, mainly because I need to finish up the gifts and cards and get them shipped out first. Sewing is ticked off my list and shortly we're heading out to pick up the rest of what we need for the baking/preserving end of things. Then it will be on to wrapping - and somewhere in there I have to write the Christmas 'newsletter' and get the cards addressed. Every year there's less of those to send.

    1. Hi MA:
Exactly! Same here, girlfriend. The older I get, the less inclined I am for the hauling, too. Plus, Handsome will leave right after our anniversary the end of December, which leaves me to put it all away. Oh, joy! So, "less" would definitely be better. I'm so proud of you for getting your sewing done so early. Next year, I'll have to follow YOUR lead. We still have to get our annual photograph taken. Maybe it will be nice enough to do it this weekend. We don't send a slew of cards out anymore either, but there are a few that go to Florida, a few other states, and then Wisconsin family and friends, so once the photo is done, I have to get the cards ordered.
      Yikes! Here we go again...

  4. I'm not a HalloThanksMas person either.
Thanksgiving is my favorite holiday. I do love Christmas and all that goes with it, but
I've always felt it should be more like Thanksgiving and remembering the real reason for the season.
Enjoy your dinner, I'm looking forward to seeing who showed up this time.

    1. Hi Shirley:
I know what you mean. Thanksgiving was always more meaningful to me than Christmas after I grew up. I love the Christmas finery, but it's so much work to haul in and out now. I know you understand. The most fun year since we moved here was the year Handsome went to Florida early and I decorated to the hilt, knowing he was flying home for the holidays. I think the decorations stayed up nearly until February that year! I do like to make a nice meal for Christmas, so we'll see what the kids have planned and see what we can pull off. They're always so busy, so it usually ends up being just the two of us, and although the food is just as good, there's less of it to prepare. (I'm not complaining!) We had fun yesterday. They're all great friends.
      Take care,
      xoxo
