A Wooly Bear...

Brynwood Needleworks - Wooly Bear - Joy

I managed a little needle dancing on Saturday evening and Sunday. I purchased a pattern for the bear from Anna at AmuruToys HERE on Etsy, and added my own personal touches.

This bear is only 6" tall from his toes to the tips of his ears. Even though he's not smiling, he's very joyful on the inside! After stitching the face and embroidered design, I assembled him according to the designer's instructions. I think future bears may be a bit more full (I'll add more cotton stuffing). I'm not sure if he'll keep the scarf or not, but for now, I like it.

My idea is to create more wool bears like this one as bowl fillers. It's always a good thing to have a bowl, filled with positive affirmations...joy, comfort, peace, love, grace, give, laugh, happy, kiss, hug (because everyone should have a bear hug!), and a few more. I'm also thinking I may do a series in linen as small gifts.

Brynwood Needleworks - Wooly Bear's Tail

I even decided this little bear needed a tail. If you'd like to create a few of your own, I can recommend AmuruToys' pattern. It's easy to read and follow. It's called "Felt Bear", and it's an immediate download in pdf format. You print it out once it's downloaded from Etsy.

I'm making bags today, and Christmas cookies in the near future. Watch for updates in my Etsy shop this week, too, for the large version of the Kirby bag. That's what I'll be working on today. I can still ship packages USPS Priority Mail, and they should reach you by Christmas. Time for coffee. Have a great week!

PS. I'm in no way compensated for my referral to Etsy or Amuru Toys. I just like to mention things I can stand behind.

Be Joyful Always...

MilkandHoneyLuxuries on Etsy

I'm sure you're wondering what else I've been doing. Book work yesterday. Book work. It was so necessary for me to purge, clean up, and backup my laptop and my desktop computers. I couldn't ignore this task for one more day.

At the end of it all, I was as happy as a clam. (Isn't that a funny term?) I managed to clean up over 350 GB of storage on my desktop! I also purged and cleared out a lot more space on my laptop, and moved important files to removable drives. It was a good day.

That means, today I can play again! I'm completing the gifts I'm sending out to my blog friends who suggested names for Jenny Janome. I want to have them all in the mail by Thursday morning. I'll show you what I've made as a little "thank you" to everyone except Laura (who won a crossbody bag for her winning suggestion - Jenny).

With all the possibilities to see bad, sad, or hurtful things these days, I hope you choose to find Joy instead.

A Short Story - Part Two...

Pinterest Image

I was asked to speak a little bit more about my "process", from this post last week. Thank you to everyone who commented on that post. I was truly overwhelmed by your responses. I had no idea when I shared those thoughts that I would touch so many kindred hearts.

Have you heard these words from William Morris before? Since moving to the farmhouse, I'm really trying to embrace these words as I sort through all the things we moved to this home. I don't want to store my clutter anymore. Likewise, for so many reasons, I don't want to store clutter in my head either.

I heard a story once about a group of people who went with their therapist to dip their toes in the sea. When they arrived at the beach, the therapist had a bag waiting with the names of each of the people on the outside. In the bags were rocks of various sizes, but each bag was rather heavy. The therapist told each person to grab a bag, and then go out an enjoy the beach.

Each person grabbed a bag and went for a walk. Soon, the therapist came upon one of the people sitting in the sand and sobbing. The therapist asked what was wrong and the (woman) told her that the bag of rocks was so heavy that she could hardly drag it around as she explored the beach.

The therapist looked at her and asked,  "Then, why are you lugging them around?" The woman looked at her dumbfounded. "You mean, I don't have to keep carrying them?", she asked. The therapist replied, "Well, of course you don't. I told you to take the bag and enjoy the beach. If lugging the contents of the bag are dragging you down, let the rocks go."

She then proceeded to encourage the woman to take a rock, toss it into the ocean to see how it felt. The woman was giddy. She had so much fun tossing the rocks into the sea that she continued to do it until her bag was empty, and once she no longer had the load, she was free to enjoy the rest of her time at the beach.

This is a story I heard decades ago, but it stuck with me. It made sense to me, and once I internalized the lesson, it was easy to embrace the lesson. Sometimes the simplest solution is the hardest one to think of on our own.

As far as those Committee members and their voices in my head? I've given them value assessments.
Like William Morris' words, are those voices useful? Do I believe them to be beautiful? If the answer is "no", then why would I give them free rent in my "house" (my head)?

I went through a grieving process with some of the Committee members, but in the end, letting them go was for the best. While some of the members still talk about me, I've decided that their opinions of me are none of my business. They don't talk with me, and that devalues them as Committee members. Their words no longer have currency in my life.

If the words of your Committee members hurt, why hold onto them? If the words of your Committee members instill sad, hurtful, anxious, vengeful, fearful or unhappy thoughts for you, let them go. Like the rocks on the beach, they'll only weigh you down.

In my case, I decided that my life deserved to be spent doing things I love, with people who love me (and I adore in return), and celebrating the wonderful blessings that God has bestowed on me. I deserve nothing less than His best for me.

Once you can say those words to yourself - "I deserve nothing less than His best for me" - it becomes easier to evict the dead weight in your Committee and embrace those loving and joyful voices that remain. Even if it's only one voice.

Be well. Be brave. Choose Joy. I know you can do it. I believe in you.

A Short Story...

1988 - Bryn and Me

Last night I told Handsome, "Honey. This morning I woke up with a post in my head." In his most deadpan tone he replied, "Donna, you really shouldn't tee them up for me like that." It took me a second, and then I realized another way he could have interpreted my statement...and I laughed out loud.

I told him that this subject came to mind after we attended the concert in the park the previous night. You see, something happened. Something that reminded me of how my life became joyful. It was a conscious effort, mind you. I woke up with these thoughts running through my head, and I hope you don't mind if I share them with you today.

Many years ago, I listened to a middle-aged public speaker/comedienne who told her audience that we all have a "Committee" inside our heads. You know. Those voices from our past who contribute to who we are today. All those people who are, or were, a part of your life who told you who you're supposed to be; how you're supposed to act; or just said something that stuck with you long-term. It might be a relative, friend or just something said to you in passing.

Here are a few examples:
My mother told me when I was a younger woman that my laugh was "too coarse", that I should "tone it down so you sound like a lady". The result was that my laugh - for a time - wasn't my own. It was hers. Of course, one was never allowed to laugh at our family dinner table, and there was a wooden spoon to reinforce that rule. I'm convinced that some parents really have no idea the negative impact they can have on their children. (Still. Put your cell phones down and talk with them!!)

When I entered my 30s, I opened Stitches. I taught needlework classes, and traveled around the country sharing what I had learned with others. My mother liked to "brag me up" to her friends, but would always add, "I have no talent. She stole it all from me." She was the first member of my Committee.

Other members my Committee? Mom Grace told me that I "was too good for her son", when I broke our engagement. Loving her son as I know she did, that must have been incredibly difficult for her to say (even if she was right).

Grace taught me most of what I learned to begin my journey into needlework. She also taught me to knit and crochet, although I also crocheted with my paternal grandmother. Over the forty two years I knew and loved her, I frequently thanked her for sharing her knowledge with me. Her response? "It's really a case of the student surpassing the teacher, my dear."

Granddad and Me

I have more...My British granddad who always called me "his beautiful, eldest granddaughter"; or my middle aged co-worker (at the grocery store where I worked my way through high school) who shared her "rules for getting older" and a few jokes I can't repeat here, but will never forget; and always, my husband who always makes me feel loved and cherished. I always remember his words.

Are there other bad examples? Oh, heck yes, and sometimes I have to take a stick to them to drive them away. A comment thrown like a dagger from an unexpected (and unexplained) person; a word in passing from a drunk in a parking lot when I walked with a post-op cane; and of course, there are more, but I don't let them live here anymore.

I could go on with examples (some great, and some not-so-great) from people whose words stuck with me, but I think you get the idea. It took me many of my sixty two years, but I finally drove out the Committee members who brought no joy into my life. They no longer take up space in my head.

Now, I'm sure you're wondering at this point just where I'm going with all this, and how it has the slightest thing to do with our concert night this week. I told you that the conductor was a real cut-up. He had the whole audience in the palm of his hand, and his manner of introducing each new piece, in addition to being clever, was funny. I joined the audience in laughter as he made his way through the program.

At the end of the evening, Handsome and I were folding up our chairs to leave, when the lady who sat in front of me turned around and got my attention. She said, "I have to tell you that your laugh is infectious. I wish I could record it to make me smile every day. I just wanted you to know that I enjoyed sitting in front of you." I was surprised, smiled and said, "Thank you."

As I went to bed Wednesday night, I reflected on that old Committee member who had managed with one sentence to make me so self-conscious about the simple, joyful act of laughing...and how the woman at the concert made me feel when she commented on my laughter before leaving the park.

This woman and her short interaction with me will stay with me. I'll carry her face and compliment with me to remind me that I chose joy. She will become the newest member of my Committee, and I'm immediately making her a Lifetime Member.

The sub-head for my blog is "...thoughts on a joyful and creative life." That's why I'm sharing this with you today. I decided long ago not to lug the boulders of sadness, frustration or downright despair around with me any longer. I left them behind nearly a decade ago. Please don't waste another moment of your life clinging to that which no longer serves you. Let go of the hurt. Let go of the words that keep you from living a beautiful, wonderful, juicy and joyful life. You deserve it. We all deserve it.

I'm a big fan of the movie "Somewhere In Time". In the movie, Jane Seymour plays the actress, Elise McKenna. She has a rather rotund suitor who pays entirely too much attention to her, and it's most unwelcomed. However, she's expected to return his affection. In a scene with a fellow actor, she's asked, "Surely, there must be something you like about the man." to which she replies, "Yes. His absence." That's how I feel about my evicted Committee members.

Thanks for letting me put this out there today. I appreciate that you stop by to see what I'm doing, and I also appreciate your visits. Be well. Be brave. Choose Joy.

Season Of Joy...

Brynwood Needleworks - Season of Joy

My BFF, Lee and I managed to get together before Handsome, the pups and I left Wisconsin. It was so nice to see her again. You know how it is with dear friends. You don't see each other for long stretches of time, but the instant you're together again, it's like you never missed a beat. That's how it is with us.

Brynwood Needleworks - Season of Joy

I gave her the 25¢ tour (Remember, it's not 50¢ until the remodeling is done), and explained what our plans are for the farm. Then we settled in to talk and catch up.

We exchanged gifts, too. I gave her one of the Grab and Go Clutches I made, and she showed me it will fit perfectly in her handbag. Now I know which style handbag I want to make for her, too. I also gave her a little of my private stash of hickory nuts. I know she'll mix them into a batch of cookies.

Brynwood Needleworks - Season of Joy

Then she gave me this tea set! It consists of a tea cup and saucer, a lid with a sweet bird perched on top, and a tea strainer for brewing loose tea. She added two English teas and a box of my favorite PG Tips English tea bags.

She knows me well. I'm looking forward to Spring when we'll be able to share time, talk and a lovely cuppa tea together. It will be like we never missed a beat.

Christmas Joy...

Brynwood Needleworks-Joy Stocking

I found the perfect decoration for our side porch entrance to the farm. (This is not to be confused with the "Friends and Family" entrance closer to the driveway.)

Brynwood Needleworks-Joy Stocking

It's a sweet, felt and wool Santa stocking with my favorite word and sentiment. One of the reasons I love the word "Joy" is because of the silent "J" in our last name. For over thirty years that this has been my last name, I chose to associate that silent letter with this word. Now you know. (wink)

Handsome and I start our Christmas celebration festivities today with family. Tomorrow with new friends, and then we'll slide into the weekend. Now that Handsome is here, it will be a joyful Christmas, indeed.

For those of you who missed seeing a post from Tag yesterday...He's been having fun running in the snow, chasing Bella Butt and sharing our visits. He's going to post this week on Christmas Eve. He asked me to send smooches to all his fans, and he'll see you Saturday.

A Few Random Thoughts...

Brynwood Needleworks - Taggart

I adore this boy. Truly.

Brynwood Needleworks - Fall Wreath

A new fall wreath to welcome visitors to the farm.
(I found this one on sale at Pier One.)

Brynwood Needleworks - Farm Wife Feet

I took this photo when I was in Florida. Don't ask why I'm wearing white anklets with my sandals. No. I haven't worn them in public...yet, but I think it's a very farm wife look. Now to find (or make) the dresses and aprons to complete the ensemble!

Thing is, when I put these socks and shoes on and looked down at them, I was instantly transported to my childhood. I remembered a lady named Bernice (Foerster) who lived near us. She always wore white anklets with her shoes (that looked like these). She wore her hair in a crown of tight, permed curls and I remember that she always had a smile on her face and a kind word. Thoughts of her stir happy thoughts for me.

I must have been only three or four years old, but I remember this lady to this very day. I guess it's true that people don't always remember what you say, but they never forget how you made them feel. I must keep this in mind as I go about my daily tasks. Bernice and her sweet demeanor will forever live in my memories.

Ella And Her Fairy...

Images used with Megan's permission
While Amy and I ate lunch on Thursday, she told me about a wonderful blog that her daughter had just started. The inspiration is what captivated me.

Apparently, Megan has been pondering a former telephone alcove in their family's hallway for some time. She wanted to do something with that spot, but hadn't come up with any good idea. One evening, she had a flash of inspiration!
Her daughter, sweet Ella, woke up the next morning to discover a fairy door and a gold fabric bag, filled with surprises.

Ella was immediately enchanted...
and filled with ideas of her own!

She has made cookies for her fairy - and the fairy writes notes to Ella.
Fairy has been working on her own little garden and asked Ella to bring clean stones to her for edging. Ella spent a long time outside doing as she was requested (look at the concentration on her face!), and by bedtime, she was ready to leave her surprises for the fairy to find overnight.

One of my favorite quotes is from today. Miss Ella was heard to say,
“The fairy left me another note!
I can’t believe this is happening to me!”

I don't want to tell any more of the story about Ella and her fairy, but I think you'll be as smitten as I am with this new contribution to Blogland. You can click HERE to read Ella's Fairy Garden blog from the beginning. I've added the link to my blog roll so I don't miss a single post.

Megan came up with the most perfect solution for a use for that old telephone alcove - and she has created a loving, thoughtful and charming teaching tool for her daughter. Ella is thinking of new, imaginative ways to spend her time.

As for me? I'm looking ahead to reading more delightful updates about Ella's life with her fairy.

Happy New Year 2015...

It's the first day of the new year and I'm so looking forward to the
next 365 days. I see many new and wonderful adventures ahead
for Handsome and me, and Tag will surely be along for the ride.

I'm already in the studio today, completing a few projects that
went unfinished last year, and I'm making a list of the other
UFOs that are waiting for my hand. What a great way to begin
a new year...doing what I love best, while my husband and pup
are in the other room watching football and relaxing at home.
The other thing I've already done is chosen my word for 2015.
Image from Desert Stream.net
Last year, I chose "Grace"...little knowing how the year would end. This year I have chosen "Joy". Mom (Grace) is surely smiling at my choice. She would love that I've chosen joy to follow the sorrow of her loss. I've chosen joy to guide me through the next year.

These definitions will guide me as I pursue joy in 2015...As a noun, joy means a feeling of great pleasure and happiness or a thing that causes joy. As a verb, joy is to experience great pleasure or delight.
Could you even imagine a day that was filled only with pure joy? This is my ambition. As my blog header states, "Thoughts on a joyful and creative life". I will seek to find as much joy as I'm able in every single day. Then, I'll do my best to share that joy with you in my daily blog posts.

Wishing you and yours a very Happy New Year...
with many days filled with Joy

A Pinch Of Joy...

We spent much of yesterday with our friends, Mike and Joann, again. It's wonderful
being able to reconnect with old friends and share stories as we catch up on our lives.

There's just something so comforting and joyful to be able to come from shared
experiences. We can laugh about an old quote without needing to repeat the story
behind it. It's nice to catch up on mutual friends as we make new memories.
The heart lace and card are from my beautiful friend, Sherry. Happy Birthday, hon!
I found this sweet measuring spoon while in Wisconsin. Now it hangs in the
studio reminding me to add a pinch of joy to every single day. Handsome and I did
that with our friends yesterday. We've already planned to see them again soon.

Today I wish the same for you. I wish you a simple "Pinch of Joy" each day.

Textures...

Coral
I found myself contemplating the textures in my daily life, so I decided
to go around the house and take pictures of some of them to share with you
today. You can probably tell what they are, but I've labeled them just in case.
Placemat

Yup. Corgi Neck Fur

Crocheted Lace

Pearl Cottons

Starfish

Basket

Crown of Thorns Blossoms

Acorns
I didn't think I needed to add fabrics to this set. Perhaps I should have
snapped a picture of the "fuzz" that I have to wipe off the walls in the
studio. Fuzz from all the dust I raise when cutting, sewing and layering
fabrics. (I found another spot that needs my Spring Cleaning touch!)

I hope I've inspired you to take a little time to consider all the myriad
textures in your life. It's my little version of "stop to smell the roses".
I'm sure you'll find your own assortment of textures to make you smile.
Happy Friday, friends!
