October Cutout Cookies...

October Cutout Cookies

I managed to bake and decorate the cutout cookies yesterday. Thing is, I substituted an icing ingredient and it's not hardening up as it should. The cookies would be a disaster by the time I'd get them to our monthly dinner.

Soooo, after work today, I'll make another few dozen cookies and use my tried and true frosting recipe. They'll be ready to go with me tomorrow. Some days it just doesn't go by the book. Lesson learned.

On the bright side, my Handsome Cookie Monster is quite happy to take care of the ones I won't be taking to our Wednesday dinner.

Barefoot In The Kitchen Today...

Pumpkins and Ghosties Cookie Cutters

Last weekend's Craft Day was cancelled on Saturday due to our hostess and her husband being ill, but this week's classmate dinner is still on.

I'm going to be baking cutout sugar cookies to take along this time, so I wanted an autumn/halloween theme. I'm actually not big on this October holiday - I know. I know. - so while the ghost-shaped cutter is a nod to the 31st, I'm not going all in on the theme. I'll make this one a cutesy ghost.

The pumpkins are more my October style, so I chose two different shapes for a little variety. One is round and plump, while the other will be thin and tall.

I'm working tomorrow, so I'm baking the cookies today and will decorate them on Wednesday morning, with plenty of time for them to set up before I take them to town. Although, if I'm up to it, I'll decorate some when I get home from work tomorrow night, which would be even better. Either way, they'll be ready to pack up to take with me on Wednesday afternoon for our get-together.

I'll be sure to take pictures before I carry them off...and I'll be sure to leave some behind for Handsome. I swear he's the original Cookie Monster!

PS. I prefer barefoot to shoes any day, so I definitely prefer going without shoes when I'm sewing or cooking. I couldn't resist using the reference in my post title today.

Cookie Failure...

I know you probably think these look okay, but believe me I made a bad decision and paid for it. Handsome had errands to run yesterday morning, so I figured I make cutout cookies and surprise him when he got home. Close, but no cigar.

I baked off two dozen delicious cutout cookies in no time. Then it was time to make the icing that I can always count on. The recipe calls for shortening, 8 cups of confectioner's sugar, vanilla, almond flavoring...and heavy cream, added between cupfuls of the sugar. You only add 3 T. of cream at a time, and you get a perfect consistency. It's a no-fail recipe...until yesterday.

I had heavy cream in the fridge, so I grabbed the bottle and added the first three tablespoons. The container smelled a bit sour, but I figured it was just the cream around the rim and cap of the bottle and cleaned it. I tasted the cream and it tasted fine to me. So onward I went. I could still smell the "sour", but figured it was just a residual aroma.

All the cookies were frosted when Handsome got home. He walked into the kitchen and said, "You made cookies!" He walked over to the platter and said, "Does something smell off to you?" I'd already cleaned up the kitchen, so I explained about the cream. We discussed at length and I said it might be the frosting, but every time I picked up a cookie and smelled it, it smelled fine to me.

I ate a cookie and said I didn't think they tasted bad or smelled bad, and then I pulled the leftover white icing out of the fridge and we inspected that. Long story short, I ended up in tears (having just spent a couple hours of baking and decorating), and tossed the lot into the trash. I didn't want to take any chances.

Handsome was very kind and said that I can't be perfect every time I cook or bake, and in all our years together, there have only been a handful of what I'd term disasters. I count this among them.

We made dinner together. We had prime rib, mashed potatoes and steamed peas. Then, I pulled out a (cheater) package of Betty Crocker Sugar Cookies and baked those for dessert. Not at all what I'd planned, but then...I guess that's just the way the cookie crumbles sometimes. (Sorry for the pun.)

I tossed the heavy cream, too, by the way. I'll do better next time, for sure. I won't be baking today, electing to work on my heart brooches instead. I'm putting this little fiasco behind me, and will concentrate on something completely different for the day. It's snowing again today, so stitching is a perfect pastime. Don't tell anyone how badly I messed up those cookies, okay? It can be our little secret.

Images From December Sewcial Sisters...

Sewcial Sisters - Terry's Christmas Cushion Project

I'm sharing pictures today from our December Sewcial Sisters day at The Gathering. It was a perfect day for a drive, and the sun shone on Primitive Gatherings' retreat house all day.

As you look through these photos, I'd like to also draw your attention to all the gorgeous red and white quilts that surrounded us as we visited and stitched on our respective projects. These are all part of the Red & White Quilt Show now in progress. I think Lisa said there were about 140 entries, and they're all so impressive!

Sewcial Sisters - My Needlework in Progress

I shared the baby kimono during our Show & Tell. This is what I worked on while we chatted all day. I was inspired by the work of another artist on Instagram. I'm going to turn this into an ornament for a friend.

We all brought treats that we shared (before and after lunch), so each of us went home with a nice assortment of cookies, fudge, and other confectionaries. All my cookies were either eaten or went home with the ladies.

The ladies all asked for my recipe, so I pointed everyone to the original source. In case you're interested, click HERE for the cookies. THIS is her frosting recipe, which I use every time - unless I make royal icing. They're both delicious and fool-proof wonderful cutout cookies, and they're the only recipe I've used since moving back to Wisconsin seven years ago.

I've got errands this morning, and then I'll be home working on my class project for tomorrow in Portage. I'll give you a sneak peek tomorrow, so you can see what we'll be working on. See you tomorrow!

There Be Bears!...

Farmhouse Cutout Cookies

I finished my commissions in the morning yesterday, and then headed down to the kitchen. I had cookies to bake yesterday so I could decorate them today. I used the same recipe I used last year, as they were a big hit. I shared the recipe in my blog HERE last year. I decided on polar bears this year.

Six Of Eight And A Half Dozen

I made four batches of the dough, and ended up with eight and a half dozen cookies. Six for the cookie exchange, and two and a half for us to enjoy at home.

I posted about making the cookies on my Facebook page, and one of my friends said she thought I was amazing. I wrote back and told her that I'm only "partially amazing". When I finished cleaning up after making all those cookies, I took an hour-long nap before dinner. lol (Nothing like keeping it real for you, right?)

I'm well-rested now, and ready to decorate these bears! I'm going to use royal icing again, and we'll see how ambitious I am with the decorations. I know that however they get iced, they'll be tasty. It really is a never-fail recipe. The party's tomorrow, so I'd better get cracking so they set up properly before I have to box them up again.

I'll share pictures of the completed cookies (and the appetizer I'm taking with me), on Monday. I'll share that recipe then, too.

Happy December!

Like A White Wing Dove...

Dove-Shaped Cutout Cookies

Just Kinda Almost like a white wing dove.

My six dozen cookies are done for the Sunday Cookie Exchange! I haven't made a cutout cookie since I was a little kid, so I'm thinking I was pretty bold to assume I could just channel Sweet Ambs without any practice.

Truthfully? I'm exhausted by my first effort. The cookies are really tasty. I used this recipe from In Katrina's Kitchen blog, and love everything about it. I let them sit over night before decorating them.

Dove-shaped Cookies With Eyes

I've been watching video tutorials for quite a long time, so I had just enough knowledge to be dangerous. It took me about four hours to decorate six dozen cookies. They're not gorgeous, but they're kind of pretty and the do taste good thanks to the recipe I linked for you.

I had completed icing the first two dozen cookies, and then I sprinkled sparkling sugar on the still-wet icing. I set those aside and started icing the next dozen. When the icing on the first cookies was hard set, I added eyes...and immediately regretted it. I just didn't like them. The last four dozen cookies didn't get eyes.

Party - and my Birthday - is tomorrow. I'll get pictures of everyone's cookies to share, too. I can feel the added pounds already. sigh

Happy Weekend, Friends.
