Quilt Top Reveal...

Completed Quilt Top

I completed my quilt top for Handsome last night. It's so large that it's difficult to see the entire top - even with him holding it up. Once it's quilted and bound, you'll be able to see the entire quilt on a bed, but I wanted you to get a glimpse today.

All the borders are on the quilt, and they're the same all the way around. I know it's hard to see that at the bottom and top, but the are the same. You can also see some darker or lighter areas because the quilt is backlit. Those anomalies don't show in daylight.

Each yellow block now bears the names of all of our dogs for the past forty four years. Yellow labradors' names are stitched in a buttery-colored thread. The Golden retrievers are in a rusty color (except one that I forgot to change out). The black labs have black thread, and he even said I should put Fezzik and Tag's names on so they're in a darker gold with one letter in white (like their fur colors).

Finally, I added a heart with a paw print in the center of each of the name blocks...just because. I'll share closeups of those blocks once I get this big boy quilted, which I'll at least start today.

I work again tonight. Yes. It's the weekend again! My plan is to finish this by the time the Sunday rolls around, if not before. Of course, I'll hand bind it once I've assembled the top, back and batting. I'm going to do my best to show you a completed quilt on Monday.

Stay Warm and Safe!

  1. Holy mackerel, that IS big! What a lovely tribute to all your sweet pups! I can't imagine all the thought and effort that went into layout... I'm convinced you have worker elves that come in at night to help 😉

    1. Hi Lois:
I agree! His request went from lap quilt to "I'd like to be able to cover up with it to sleep." All the quilts I've made that are professionally long-armed, and he loves these lofty, low quilting ones because they're light weight and warm. His wish is my command. I think he's going to enjoy this one for another forty years...or so. I wish the worker elves would finish it. It's going to be a bear to wrangle around to quilt the layers together. sigh.

    1. Hi Sandi:
Thanks, dear. Not very often he gets to see his present in progress! I'll be happy when I can hand it over to him to enjoy.

  4. And just like that yet another quilt. So well thought out, as always. I've tried a twitch of the nose and snap of the fingers, doesn't work for me like it does for you. Just beautiful and the borders pull it all together. I had one of those 6'5" guys, don't ever ask them to hang something at eye level, it
will be four inches from the ceiling, ask me how I know.

    1. Hi Shirley:
I'll share photos of my notes when this one is done. I think you might get a kick out of them! I could use a little "twitching and snapping" now as I near the end. Still assembling and then hand stitching the binding. sigh. You've got me laughing again! When I read this to Handsome, he cracked up, too. You're so right about "eye level"! lol
      Hugs,
