Big Storm...

This is what our apple tree looked like yesterday morning. This is an old tree, and Handsome (who used to tend his own apple orchard before he met me) said it's never been properly trimmed so that it would produce optimal harvests. He also said, it's too pretty as it stands now to do more than trim away the dead branches. There's one on the left side of the tree here, but the hummingbirds love to fly over and land on those branches. Now that our overhead power lines are underground (another favorite perch for them), we'll be leaving that branch for the time being.

To the right of the apple tree is a beautiful, big lilac bush. There was always a lovely stone circle with some large boulders to mark its placement, however it's overgrown with black raspberries these days. They were volunteers planted by the birds.

My dilemma with removing them is that I harvest the berries for preserves each fall, and they're quite tasty. Do I remove the prickly berry bushes to clean up the lilac bed, or leave them for preserves? I haven't decided yet.

When I photographed the apple tree yesterday morning, the blossoms were slowly falling like snowflakes onto the grass. It was really quite lovely.

Last night, though, we had a whopper of a storm roll through. There were high winds and heavy rains. Our state weather service was reporting tornadoes all around us, so it was a pretty violent event. The storm passed before dark, so I looked out to check on the status of the bird feeders I absentmindedly neglected to bring in. All feeders were still in place, but half of the apple tree's blossoms had blown away with the wind.

The tree is still standing and still beautiful, so for that I'm very grateful. All our other trees - especially the grand old maple in the front yard - are also still standing. Our farmhouse kept us safe and dry as it had for many generations before she became ours. So, all in all, we did well. We count our blessings, and wake up to another beautiful day at Hickory Hill farmhouse.

I hope all my local blog friends fared equally well, and that you're all safe from harm. I also hope everyone in the storm's path in Wisconsin or Michigan are okay, too.

My last day of work this week is today. Then I'll have the weekend off. One more week of three six hour days and then back to normal. I can't wait! Gotta run. Happy Friday!!!

  1. Glad you didn't have more damage.
It was a wicked storm. I read that 1 did touch down on the other side of town, many lines down.
Our power went out at 6:00, & came back on at 3:00 this morning.
We have a few branches down from our Birch tree, & some larger branches broken on the Pine tree.
We haven't checked teh house outside yet for hail damage. It was about the size of a marble & hitting pretty hard.
    Glad there wasn't more damage.

    1. Dear Marilyn:
Oh, my goodness! I'm so glad you're okay. I've seen so many images and videos showing the damage over your way. I hope you don't find any more. Again, thank God you're okay.

    2. Yes, we are fortunate, a house right up the street had 2 sides of their barn torn off & some extensive tree damage.

  2. Glad you and your trees escaped heavy damage from the storm. In our area we're still recovering from the big ice storm. It seems that the storms these days are far more damaging than ever before and that there are more of them. Glad you and your Handsome were safe in your cozy farmhouse.

    1. Hi MA:
We were extremely fortunate. Apparently, those bad cells were all around us, but we stayed safe. I think you're right. We're seeing more violent and damaging storms here, too, lately. I'm glad you're okay, dear.

    1. Hi Sherry;
I agree. We were a little afraid to look after the storms passed. I'm so glad our place didn't sustain any damage. Happy weekend to you, too, dear.

  4. Confession time, I'm a huge weather channel nerd!! I was glued to the weather in your area and sent prayers that it would go around you. I have a large Snow Fountain (weeping cherry only white) in front of our garage. Every year (36 and counting) with out fail, once it is in full bloom I know that within two days after that we will have a monster rain storm, blossoms gone, clockwork. We are getting storms Saturday, but nothing like the Midwest.
How are the two former 'barn ladies' doing?
    Have a wonderful weekend.

    1. Hi Shirley:
I remember saying to Handsome, "I sure hope we don't get some sort of wind event soon so we can enjoy the blossoms on the apple tree for a little longer this year." Next day...BOOM! ugh A weather channel nerd, eh? I never would have guessed. Thanks for the prayers, hon. I know they were heard. Barn ladies, "labbador" ladies, Handsome and I were just hanging out in our living room the whole time. As soon as the storm passed, the little girls wanted to go out. They lasted about ten minutes, and then Claudette signaled they wanted back in. It's kind of cute. She jumps up onto one of the lawn chairs we have on the porch and she taps at the screen until I hear her and let them in the house. I'm not quite sure who serves who around here, but I fear I somehow became the servant to those two! sigh Thanks for keeping track of us and for the prayers. I know they were heard, dear.
