Sneaky Peeky Saturday...

While ~~patiently~~ awaiting the next installment of the Scrappy Plate Club, I decided to start a few of the Farmer's Wife Sampler quilt blocks. I can already tell that this will be interesting...and a bit challenging.

I'm hoping to work out the bugs before the rest of the QAL members join in so I can share what I've learned with them. I already have a few ideas.

If you're looking for me this morning, I'll be at Sandy's Quilt Shop catching up with my quilting friends. I'm going to take my blocks and ask for some expertise from the masters.

Remember those assorted green blocks from the hands of all the quilt guild members? Ivory/Tan was the fabric color that won in my poll last week. That's next on my machine. Perhaps I'll work on that this weekend. Next week for sure. Thanks to everyone who voted. I appreciate seeing what y'all thought.

It's Almost Time...

Such a sweet romantic image. Quite different from my imaginings of the life of a farm wife that might have followed, don't you think? I've managed to find more than a few cover images of the Farmer's Wife Magazine, and this one is from June of 1936.

It reminds me a little of our process for beginning the quiltalong. You're committed to participate (Not signed in blood, but you want to join the fun), you've chosen the fabric (or will soon), and you're busy copying templates. Still in the "honeymoon" phase...

It's almost time for us to begin our Farmer's Wife Sampler Quiltalong! If you're going to join us, I hope you're anxious to get started. February 1st will be the launch date for our party!

Pretty Plates...

My Dresden plates remind me of color wheels. The spokes are comprised of all the colors and patterns of the Moda fabrics I chose from the Martinique line. They really make me happy!

I finished all twelve, and after rechecking the original pattern, I've decided that twelve will be enough for my quilt. I'm going to make the centers from the fabric I've laid behind this plate. Soft enough so that it won't take away from the differences on each one or bring attention to the centers themselves.

I am also going to throw in a little modification. I've decided to lay out all my blocks on point, rather than lay them out square to the design. That will automatically make my quilt a little wider, and because I'll need to fill in the squares between the squares, it will also be longer. Once I've done that, I'll decide whether or not I'll change the measurements for the sashing and the borders.

Remember that this quiltalong is supposed to run about six months, so I've finished my work for this month. Now to wait until Anne posts the next step. Can I? I don't know. I'm so in love with this fabric, that I might have to forge ahead of the group. But not this week.

These are all the fabrics that will be used to complete my queen size quilt. Now, to start thinking about what I'm going to name it! What do you think? Do you love it, too?

It's Coming Together...

I love making plates...Dresden plates, that is! I've been a busy seamstress, to be sure. I've already made eight of the twelve plates needed for the quilt pattern.

I have a regular assembly line going. All the pieces were cut and sorted for color value and then I started sewing.

There is a certain amount of joy involved in choosing where to place each pattern and color along each wheel. Stitch across all the ends in a continuous line so they stay in order. Then, cut one spoke off the line, turn the point, press and join it to the piece ahead of it. Slowly, each plate came together.

By the end of my sewing day yesterday, I had a beautiful array of plates on my work table. I'll finish the last four today...or decide that I want to make more for a larger finished quilt. Either way, I'll be making more of those lovely Dresden plates.

I'm so glad that I decided to join Anne's Scrappy Plate Club. I've never made the Dresden Plate before, and I can honestly say that I'm looking forward to watching my finished quilt emerge. Thanks to everyone for the feedback you've given me. More soon.

Tuesdays With Tag - Beach Bum...

Hi! Tag here. Now that I'm a graduate of Mr. Mike's Good Dog Camp, Mom said that I can start writing my own posts. Today, I want to tell you how much I liked the Venice Dog Beach on Sunday.

It was great being out in the sunshine and surf with all the other dogs. There were big dogs, little yippy dogs, and dogs of all sizes. I sniffed and wagged at all of them. Mom laughed. She told people I was "networking".

One of the things I really liked was running through the water. I even jumped in to play with some little kids who were in the ocean. I think I was swimming with the sharks, even though no one saw any. Maybe I scared them all away!

I got to meet other corgis, too! There were a few others that were my same color, but I really liked these guys. That handsome devil out in front is one of my new pals, Taz. (His name is almost like mine!)

My buddy Spark Plug (Mr. Bob's dog) had a nice hole dug in the sand before I got there, but he was happy to share with everybody. I even made it a little deeper for us. (I'm a little bigger than Spark and needed to make it fit me.)

Mom shot this sixteen second "short film" of me on the beach for you to see. I hope you like it as much as I do. If you want autographs, just let me know. I'll ask Mom to help.

I have to go now. Mom says I can't be playing on the computer all day. I've got chores. (She said I should remember to sign off like Fezzik did, so here goes.) 'til next time,

Gettin' Scrappy...

I have a button in my left sidebar "declaring" that I'm participating in Bunny Hill's Scrappy Plates Quiltalong. I went into my cabinets to choose which fabrics I wanted to use to make mine. I know the point is to make a quilt from fabric scraps, but I usually share my scraps with one of the gals from the quilt guild...and I have a ~~huge~~ ~~sick~~ ~~copious~~ ~~frightening~~ little fabric stash from which to choose.

I looked at my fat quarter sets and decided on Moda's Martinique line. I also have some yardage of a couple of these fabrics, so I'll be able to use that for sashing, borders and backing. Perfect!

I love these colors, and the patterns include sea coral, geraniums (my favorite!), polka dots and paisleys. You can see that I separated each of these stacks by color values so I was ready to get started. I did move two of the fabrics out of one pile into another. (See that red in the right column of "mediums"? That's one of them).

According to Anne's instructions, I'll need twenty to thirty different fabrics, cut into 4" x 12" strips. (I have over thirty in this fat quarter pack, so I'm good to go.) I started by cutting the strips I needed from all the medium value fabrics. I only need 4" x 12" from each fat quarter, so the remainder of each piece of fabric went back into stash for another project.

After that step was finished, I took out my Easy Dresden ruler and cut stacks of strips into the pieces that will be the start of my spokes in the Dresden Plate blocks. I'll be cutting all of the strips from dark and light values before I start any sewing. I'm planning to spend today doing that. (I'm soooo happy to be back in the studio!)

I only got this far yesterday because Tag and I headed over to the Venice Dog Beach to meet up with friends with corgis in the afternoon. (Tag will be telling you about that tomorrow!)

I've already chosen my background fabrics for the blocks and think it's going to be a pretty quilt. Because I've taken the "Process Pledge", I'll be sharing my progress on this quilt with you. It will be fun to show you more photos as I go.

I Have A Question...

Last fall, our quilt guild had a sale for the members. At that sale, I found a package of finished quilt blocks that had been created by the guild members prior to my becoming a member. They all have the color "green" in common. There were a total of 54 blocks and they're all beautiful. I'm looking forward to creating a quilt with them, and I think the members would love to see them all assembled.

Here's my question...The blocks in the photo are a good representation of all the varieties of green included in the assortment. I'm having a difficult time choosing a color for the sashing and border(s). What color would you choose? I have a beautiful orange batik that really makes the colors pop. I have plenty of ivory, cream or tan prints, but I'm concerned that they would be a little blah. Perhaps a yellow? Brown? I even have a batik that incorporates a lot of the colors (toward purples) like the leafy square you see right behind the "Brynwood" of my watermark in the photo. arghhh! Help!

Choosing color can be a satisfying step. Usually, I can get a feel for the colors I want to use through the process of actually creating the blocks. In this case, that part has already been done for me, so I'm struggling with the next step. I'm interested to see what your thoughts are.

Recent Finishes...

Yesterday was a day to finish projects. I completed my mini quilt for the monthly quiltalong at Sandy's Quilt Shop. Each month is being designed by a different shop customer! Isn't that exciting? I've drawn the month of June from the basket. Then there was still one month left, so I offered to design the July mini, too. (I haven't decided what they're going to look like yet, so it's going to be a surprise!)

I'm really happy with the way my piece turned out. When I take this to the shop on Saturday, I'll take a photo of the whole wall of completed minis so you can see what the rest of them look like. I'll also get the pattern for February's design, so I'll be able to start on that one, too.

On Tuesday night, a call went out for someone to bind a scrappy quilt for the quilt show boutique in February. I love sewing on bindings, so my hand shot in the air to volunteer.

I'll get it back to the committee today or tomorrow so they can put it with the rest of the beautiful items that will be for sale at the quilt show.

It felt good to be back in the studio. Tag kept me company and reminded me to take a break from time to time. I've got an appointment to keep this morning, but this afternoon, I'll be right back in the studio to start something new. I'm looking forward to showing you what's next.

Thanks for all the comments on yesterday's post. Pat's quilts were truly inspirational, and I'm so glad I was able to share them with you. (Now, if I could only talk her into selling the amarylis quilt!)

Quilts To Die For...

Last night was our monthly quilt guild meeting, and we had a special guest to share her quilt journey with us. Consider yourselves fortunate that you get to see photos of her work. I was drooling so much that I'm surprised I didn't ruin the images in the camera! Also, the watermark on my photos is only because I took the pictures. Don't think that I had anything to do with the creation of these stunning quilts!

Our guest speaker was Pat C. Jennings. We were all enrapt by her storytelling - and her Kentucky accent. She shared some of her gorgeous art quilts with us, and believe me, each one was more incredible than the last.

I think this amarylis quilt is my absolute favorite! I love the colors, and look how she did the stripey border on only two sides of the quilt, instead of repeating that all the way around. How clever is that? I might just have to ~~steal~~ appropriate this border idea for a future quilt of my own.

Pat is also a painter, and she said that this amarylis image is one of her favorites to paint, too.

I love the separate blocks in this colorful piece. Rather than simply sprinkling these bright flowers all around, she created sections of flowers. I really like her design eye.

Of course, I'm going to love this autumn-inspired quilt. The colors are perfect choices for her theme and I love the juxtaposition of colors across the blocks. It was also beaded for added interest! Oh! Oh! Some of her quilting is by hand, too! Incredible!

Pat has shown her pieces at Paducah, Ky and in a number of other prestigious quilt shows. This quilt is a perfect representation of exactly "why" she is an award-winning quilter/author/teacher. Tuesdays With Tag - Graduation Day...

January 14, 2011 l-r: Mike Sommers, Taggart and Handsome

If you checked in over the weekend, you already know that Tag came home on Saturday. As I've been saying, "There was rejoicing throughout the land". To say I was tickled would be the understatement of the year (and it's only January!).

I spent most of the day watching out the window and trying to estimate when Mike and Joann would pull in the driveway with my boy. They arrived around 4:30 pm, and they also brought along a little Golden retriever named MacKenzie who's living with them for a while. She only stayed overnight with them, but we seriously considered dog-napping her. She is adorable!

We welcomed everyone and then Tag came out of the kennel to my open arms. After cuddling and memorializing his homecoming with photos, Mike took Tag to the front yard to show us how far he'd come since our last visit...and to show off his skills as part of his graduation demo. Naturally, I shot a video for you. I hope you'll accept my apologies in advance for my spontaneous reactions. There were times I just couldn't resist laughing at his exhibition, and I am just so proud of him.

While we were all eating dinner that evening, Mike asked me exactly how old Tag is. I told him nine and a half months. Mike was shocked! He thought Tag was between twelve to eighteen months old. When he learned that Tag is still a puppy, he said he was even more impressed with his drive, maturity and abilities. My buttons were bustin'!

So, please turn up your sound a bit, grab a cuppa tea and relax while you watch Taggart, World's Smartest Corgi (ok. Maybe I'm overstating it a bit, but hey, I'm his mom and I'm allowed to be biased!).

I've promised Tag that he could start writing his own posts after he graduated from camp, so next week, he'll be speaking with you in his own voice. 'til then...

Wisconsin Cheeseheads...

I admit it. I was a sloth yesterday. Slow, lazy, playin'-with-my-little-dog, do-nothing sloth. Our dear friends shared a meal with us and then headed home to the other coast to watch the Packer game. Of course, we watched the game here at home.

Don't you love this cheese box? I saw it two years ago in a Piggly Wiggly in our old neighborhood and called them when we got back home to see how I might be able to buy one. The gal told me that if I paid postage, she'd send it to me FREE. Sold!

I thought it would be appropriate to use this image to represent the Wisconsin cheeseheads who watched their beloved football team end their Super Bowl bid today. It sure was a fun season, and although they're finished for this year, we'll be cheering for them again next season.

I've got Tag's graduation video all ready to share with you tomorrow, and I'm looking forward to sharing a few finished projects with you this week. I'll be in the studio when I'm not playing with my little dog. Have a great week, y'all!

My First Project of 2012...

I've been itching to get back into the studio to create something. Yesterday, I finally managed to steal a little time to go and play.

I belong to a monthly mini hanging quilt QAL at my favorite local shop, Sandy's Quilt Shop. We have a different person designing a quilt for each month, and we got our first design right after Christmas.

It's a really simple design. 12" wide by 14" long. The designer chose a bell as the focal image, and she showcased her ribbon weaving talent for her bell. We can choose any fabric we want to use, and can modify the bell into our own style.

I started by choosing my two main fabrics and getting out Miss Ellie to sew the machine embroidery of a Father Time design. You can see my fabric choices in the first photo. I didn't get it all assembled and quilted today, but I'll finish it next week and show you what it looks like all done. (Remember, Tag is coming home today and our friends will be staying overnight. I'll be spending time with them instead of in the studio this weekend!)

I'd like to finish out this week by sharing a video of Handsome playing the spotlight solo for Ravel's Bolero. I can't tell you how much I enjoy watching him play. My recording can give you just a glimpse into my view from the balcony. I am one proud and blessed wife.

Paint, Planning and Playing...

You might have noticed that I've been in a redecorating mood lately. Heck, if you've been on my blog at random times during the day, you'll find me experimenting with color, margins, gadgets and what-have-you. I guess it's the desire for something different to begin the new year, whether it be on my blog or in our home.

I've been cleaning rooms, tossing, painting and re-thinking the amount of ~~clutter~~ stuff I have. It has always been a mixed blessing for me. So many things I care for and move from home to home, across hundreds of miles. Yet, there are times I feel more that those things own me than the other way around. I'm really getting better at moving things out of here, but it's a daily challenge.

I love the newly painted guest bathroom and I'm slowly sorting my way through paint chips as I try to decide on a new color in the guest bedroom. I want something as quiet and restful as the color we chose for the bathroom. Not the same color, but something that will coordinate with it. I plan to share it with you when I finally make my decision and start putting paint on the walls.

I forgot to tell you the trick I read about on a blog I found through Pinterest. Add a tablespoon of pure vanilla extract to your gallon of paint and you won't have a paint smell permeating the house when you're finished painting. I did this and it really works! (It doesn't affect the color of the paint, either.) All that fresh paint, with none of the yucky paint smell. Magic, I tell you!

Oh, and let me say something about Pinterest. I'm still finding my way around, but it's a great resource. You can bookmark anything you find on the internet into one handy place. (Dang! Like I needed one more place to kill time.) There's a lot I don't know about the site yet (someone told me that she'd seen some of my Brynwood photos "pinned", but I can't find any), but I'll be rationing my time there as I try to figure out how to navigate all the cool places you can get to through them. I have a lot of projects I want to do this year, so I can't be spending all my time there (and believe me, it wouldn't be hard to do).

Last night was Handsome's spotlight solo as he played the main percussion rhythm for Ravel's Bolera with the North Port Concert Band. He was wonderful, so I want you to see him play, too! I haven't downloaded and edited the video yet, but I'll do that today and share it with you tomorrow.

Oh, TOMORROW!!! TAG COMES HOME TOMORROW! As I told my friend, Troy at Junk Exchange yesterday..."There will be rejoicing throughout the land".

Spinning Wheel Decor...

My sweet friend, Tammy is planning a move to Virginia by the end of this year. Her husband has accepted a position in Quantico and they'll be transferred by December. I'm not particularly happy about this, you understand. Tammy was the driving force behind the knit/crochet/quilt group that first met at Books a Million in Port Charlotte, FL, and then moved across the street to Paneras.

In anticipation of the move, Tammy and her husband have been purging some of their possessions. Being a spinner, she (naturally) has a real spinning wheel, but she also had two "faux wheels" that she used in her decor that she wanted to leave behind.

Last week, she called and asked me if I'd like one of those two wheels. One was more realistic (even though it's non-functional) and the other was a planter. I told her I'd love to have the one that was more realistic-looking. She took it with her to Paneras on Tuesday evening where we transferred it from her vehicle to mine. I was surprised by how heavy it was!

Yesterday, I brought it into the house, took the wood cleaner and mineral oil to it, and it shined up like the treasure it is. Now, it sits outside the hallway to my studio. (Only because I ~~have so much crap in there that there's no floor space~~ don't have room for it in the studio!)

Thank you, Tammy. I'm grateful to have this beautiful gift from you. I'm going to try not to think about the fact that you'll be leaving before this year is over. Yes. I don't think we'll be talking about that for as long as I can avoid it. There!

Tuesdays With Tag - House Manners...

You might think it's Wednesday, but that can't be right. There's just no way I would have forgotten to post a Tuesday With Tag this week. So, Happy Tuesday! It's time for another post about my corgi!

When we went to see Tag on our last visit, I photographed his new house manners. I can't let this week pass without sharing them with you.

After his stellar field workout, we headed back to Mike and Joann's for dinner. Mike told me that his exhibition wouldn't be complete until he showed us how Tag behaves in the indoor environment. Mike invited all of us into the house and when I turned around to check on Tag I didn't see him. We were all in the house, but he was still sitting on the sidewalk outside! Mike said, "OK, Tag", whereupon the little guy stood up and strode into the house.

Mike placed him (had him sit on command) and then said, "Now we're going to simulate someone coming to your front door and how Tag should behave in that situation." He asked Joann to go outside and ring the doorbell like she was a guest coming to visit. Tag didn't budge as Joann went out and closed the door behind her. She waited a second and then rang the doorbell.

Tag looked a little curious, but didn't move. Mike went to the door and made believe he was greeting a long-lost friend. Loud and excited greetings were exchanged while the corgi watched.

Then Joann acted like a typical guest and made a big fuss over little dog. "Oh, look! He's so cute!" He walked up to her to say "hi", and then...

went into a down position so that she could greet him. We all laughed out loud to see his good manners.

There was more. We went into the living room where Joann had placed a small plate containing a piece of torn up lunch meat and a little cheese. She and Mike sat down across from each other with Tag sitting between them. They passed the plate from one to the other, holding it low and directly in front of Tag. He just looked. Then Mike dropped a piece of ham. It sat on the floor until Joann picked it up...no lunging dog. The demonstration ended with Mike placing the plate on the floor as we went outside onto the lanai. Still, Tag stayed away from the food. (Good boy!)

When he was finished, we all applauded his great work and I couldn't cuddle him enough. Eventually, Mike took him back to the kennel and gave him his dinner. Taggart had a great day, and we were all well-pleased.

Tag will be home on Saturday afternoon. Joann said he'll have a bath and get dried before they head over. That means that he'll be blowing coat all over the place by the time he gets back, and I won't care a single bit. To say I'm excited about his return is the understatement of the year. I've put up a brave front in his absence, but I've been missing my boy and can guarantee he won't be going anywhere without me for a long, long time. Three mores sleeps 'til the lad is back home!

Ain't That A Shame...

Recently, one of my friends from our Paneras knitting group gave me this dress. There were actually four dresses in the assortment she wanted to share with me, but this was the only one that I could even photograph.

All the dresses had been stored in an attic with no protection from heat or cold. Gorgeous vintage pieces that actually were falling apart in my hands when I held them. Crumbling to dust after years of neglect.

This dress is transparent (by design) with old lace and an embellished "apron" on the front. The fabric shimmers in the light, and I can only imagine how glorious this dress must have been when new.

I could have cried looking at it. You can't tell from the photos, but there was so much disintegration that there was scarcely enough fabric across the shoulders to hang it on this padded hanger to show you.

The lace along the neckline is so beautiful, and there is beadwork along the neckline and on the apron hemline.

I don't know what I'd ever do with it, and it's so fragile I don't know how much time it has left. It's just a crying shame that it wasn't better cared for.

If anyone reading my blog post today would like this piece, I'll be happy to send it to you for the cost of priority postage (medium flat rate box). Perhaps someone else can think of a way to salvage some of this fabric for a project (gluing it to vintage bottles, or soldered between pieces of glass to create a necklace). Patience Is A Virtue...

This is Sam. Haughty, talented, new grandpa Sam. He belongs to Tag's trainer, Mike and his wife, Joann. I call him "Grandpa" because as he's resting in the front yard, a new litter of 18 hour old puppies, sired by his son, was cuddled up to their mama in the kennel.

When we first took Tag over to start his training program, we stayed overnight. On Thanksgiving Day, the weather was gorgeous and Sam was basking in the yard taking in a little Florida sunshine. Well, you just know I had to go and grab my camera.

Now, I'll admit to you that I didn't want to disturb Sam, so I was sitting on the floor in the entry to the house...shooting through the glass into the yard. In fact, I was leaning forward to shoot between the shutters on the front door that cover the glass. I know I should be ashamed, but I am more than happy with the quality of the images I took. (Lucky for me that glass was clean!)

I actually think that, in spite of my efforts, Sam knew I was watching (and photographing) him...and he didn't seem too impressed.

Matter of fact, he seemed a little haughty, if you ask me. Nose in the air and all. Or perhaps, he could smell his grandkids or "training" going on in the back yard.

"I'm thinking if I don't look at her, maybe she'll go away."

"I could close my eyes. No one likes pictures with my eyes closed."

But, I know this works. Keep snapping photos. I mean, with a digital camera, images are cheap. Just add more pixels to the memory. I have to be patient. Because, if I'm patient, I get the "money shot". That perfect image of my subject. His Royal Highness, Mr. Sam.

And to make sure I'd go away after he gave me what I was looking for...he shook his head, flipping his ear up. Flip being the operative word. "Go away kid. You're bothering me."

Like Shoes Or Peanuts...

We went to our local Apple retailer in Sarasota yesterday to purchase an iPad for Handsome. (He's been wanting one for quite a while and we decided to wait until after Christmas to go shopping for one as his Birthday gift.)

While in the store, we were looking at all the different cases to protect his iPad, and my eyes settled on this little beauty - an iPhone cover.

Look at all the little houses and turrets. The images are all bas relief and it reminds me of a mountainside village. It came in two colors...this one and another in a dark blue-green. I preferred this color thinking it might be easier to find in the bottom of my purse!

I know that I recently showed you the Cath Kidston cover I bought while we were traveling last summer. I still really like it and will use it again. The thing is, I think iPhone cases are like shoes or peanuts or potato chips...no one can have just one.

We had a grand day together - Handsome and I. We went shopping and then shared lunch in Sarasota. Today, he's playing in a circus band at Gibsonton, FL. I know he is looking forward to spending tomorrow relaxing and playing with his newest gadget. Thanks to everyone who left Birthday wishes for him. He really appreciated it.

Bunny Hill Scrappy Plate Club...

One of my favorite quilting blogs to visit is Anne Sutton's Bunny Hill Designs blog and website. She has the prettiest designs, and I own more than a couple of her patterns.

When stopping by a couple of days ago, I found that she's hosting a six-month long quiltalong (QAL) on her blog. She'll be posting tutorials on her Dresden Plate design scrappy quilt, and has already posted Part One.

Let's see...scrappy quilt, Dresden plate (I've always wanted to do that design), free tutorial, six months long. Yup. I'm on board! I figure that I'll work on the Farmer's Wife blocks one week, and then work on the Dresden Plate another week. Two quilts accomplished for sure in 2012! I'm going to add her button to my sidebar to link to her blog (and you can click here to learn more about her Scrappy Plate Club).

Dreaming of a Spacious Haven...

One of my blog girlfriends recently commented on my "always organized" studio space. I giggled when I read that because many times it's far from "calm" in there. We always want to put our best face forward on our blogs, so I rarely show you the "real" images in my creative cave.

I cleaned out the closet in the bathroom next to the studio two days ago. It's the "overflow" space that I use for storing what I can no longer fit into the studio. I really needed to see what was in there, having not emptied it in quite a while. That was my major project for Tuesday.

I kept pulling things out of the closet and sorting through them and by the time I was finished, my studio was utter chaos! Just look at this mess! I took two bags of yarn and two boxes of knitting magazines to Paneras on Tuesday night to give away. I shared my stash, and more than a few women went home really happy.

It took me all day yesterday, but by the time I needed to start dinner, I finally had it whipped back into some semblance of order. (That's the first photograph in this post.)

After living in the Flying Cloud last summer, I've felt that there was too much stuff in my studio. I'm going to make it my mission to continue to clear the clutter - little by little (we don't want to do anything drastic, after all) until my room is returned to a spacious haven that will better foster creativity.

So, don't think that it's always tidy and clean here at Brynwood. I'm just like the rest of you. Sometimes "messy" just happens.

Greeting The New Year With A Paintbrush...

On New Year's Day I got a bee in my bonnet. I wanted to start the new year off with a house project. Something a little more involved than vacuuming and dusting. You have no idea how much I dislike those glass doors on the guest bathroom tub, but I'll tell you. It's a lot!

Having them on the tub makes it difficult to bathe grandchildren or step into the shower (if you're tall). Let's not even talk about how hard it is to keep them clean! I have to get into the tub to clean the tub - and the doors are always water-spotted, even if you use a squeegee. Gah!

The walls have been that chalky white color for the whole nine years we've lived here. I'm sick of it. It was time to choose a color that would accent the off-white woodwork.

I went to Home Depot and brought home a bunch of paint chips. I love Behr paint and the great coverage I get when I use it. Handsome and I finally settled on this color - Wheat Bread. I wanted to make sure we didn't go too dark, otherwise I might have chosen Mocha Accent. I love the color, but didn't want to darken a small room that much. (I cut the color name off the bottom chip when I cropped this image.)

Anyway, Handsome and I removed those shower doors on Sunday morning and put them aside to donate. We tried the local Habitat for Humanities office, but they said they didn't take shower doors. (Really? They rebuild and refurbish houses and don't take stuff like this?) They weren't grungy or anything. They just needed a light cleaning and we'd been really careful to remove them without damaging them. In the end, we contacted the Suncoast Humane Society Thrift Store, and they were thrilled to have them. Handsome delivered them to their store on Monday while I started painting.

This is the "after" picture of the tub area. New shower curtain, rugs and waste basket. The color is actually truer on the second photo (below). This one looks more tan than it actually is.

This is better. See all those tiles across the back of the shower? They wrap all the way around, and they were installed in the house when we purchased it. There were two young children living here with their parents, and their handprints and artwork became part of the decor when the house was built. Perhaps some day they'll be replaced with our grandchildrens' artwork, but they'll stay for now.

This bathroom is referred to as "Jack and Jill", because it sits between two rooms and is shared by both. The tub area has its own sink and the linen closet is in this section. This is the "before" photo of the sink area.

This is the "after" photo. Subtle change, but we like it so much more in this color. I decided that the heron print was more appropriate with the seashell shower curtain than the dog images, but I had to keep that Golden figurine on the sink. It makes me smile.

The toilet side of the bathroom has a sliding door between the two rooms. It also has its own sink. "Before"...

and (a blurry) "after" shot. This section of the bath doesn't have a window, which is why I was careful choosing a color. This side could have gotten really dark had we started with a darker shade of paint.

This is the toilet area "before" painting, with my favorite grizzly bear poster on the wall. He's looking at the camera as he scratches his back against the pine tree. This used to hang in our master bath in our northern house, and I wanted to make sure it had a place in our home in Florida, too.

It went back on the wall in our guest bath. So, that's how I spent Day Two of the new year! Day Three (yesterday) was spent emptying and sorting through my studio bath closet. I'm still not finished sorting through all the things that were in that closet, but I took a few bags of yarn to my friends in the knit group at Paneras last night along with two boxes of knitting magazines. I'd say that's a pretty good start.

I'll be cleaning up the transplanted closet clutter out of the studio today and then dealing with my "piling system" in my office area so that I have that mess under control before the end of today. I need to get back to creating in the studio soon. Doing this stuff wears me out!

Tuesdays With Tag - Week Five At Camp...

When we arrived at the ranch on December 28th, Mike let Tag out of the truck and I was surprised by how mature he's looking now. He's nearly nine months old (and I think a little overweight), but his training seems to have contributed to him looking more grown up.

We had so much fun watching Mike take him through his paces, and when they were finished, it was my turn. It was hard not to smile as Tag showed me how much he's learned.

Tag will be graduating on January 14th. Mike and Joann are going to deliver him back to us, and we'll be hosting them overnight for a change.

Rather than use up a lot of words in an attempt to show you how far he's come in his studies, I'm going to share a video from our day at the Ranch. I didn't put this one to music so that you can hear Mike's comments. (It was a windy day again, but the weather was gorgeous for a day of training.) The video lasts less than three minutes, but you'll definitely get a feeling for what Tag's been learning.

Wasn't that fun? I'm looking forward to having Tag back home soon, but there will be one more Tuesdays With Tag before he's her with me again. We saw his "house" training, but I'll save those photos until next week. 'til then...

Are You Ready?...

Happy New Year, everyone! I hope all of you enjoyed the holidays. Christmas and New Year's were quiet around here, but we had a nice time celebrating the season and now I'm ready to start putting some of those resolutions into action!

You might remember this little fabric assortment. It's going to be the basis for my 2012 ongoing quilt project - The Farmer's Wife Sampler Quilt. I'm going to host a quiltalong (QAL) right here at Brynwood, and you're all invited!

Now, please understand that this will be the most low-pressure, fun and mostly unscripted QAL you'll probably ever participate in. You'll be choosing your own fabrics, which squares you'd like to create, and the finished size of your quilt.

I'm going to suggest that once you choose your quilt size, you just make the number of blocks needed to complete one horizontal row per month. That's it. (If you're making a large quilt, that might be seven blocks, but if you're doing a wall hanging, your number of blocks will be less.) The large quilt has nine rows, so you'll be finished before November, and if you're an over-achiever, you'll finish long before that! I just want you to know there won't be any pressure and you can finish and show off your blocks - and completed quilt - at your own pace.

Even if you're new to quilting you can participate. You'll be choosing your own blocks, so you can decide on your own level of difficulty, and you can repeat blocks, if you'd like. No one says they all have to be different!

I'm going to show you which blocks I'll choose to sew, and I'll give you my reasons for making them a part of my quilt. I'll also share my thoughts as they relate to the original author of each block. I'll be setting up a Flickr group so that you can upload photos of your blocks each month to share with each other, as well as those who won't be sewing along with us.

If you'd like to participate, you'll need a copy of this book. I've found the best price at Amazon, and if you can click here to purchase your copy.

I also have a set of the templates from the (included) disc, which will print out in one document, so once you've decided that you want to participate and you have your book, please let me know (via email) if you'd like the templates and I'll share them. Understand that you have to have the book, or the templates will be of no value to you.

I'm going to start this project on February 1st. I'll post the names and blog links of everyone who chooses to participate. Now, don't worry if you don't have a blog. I'd still love to have you join in the fun. You'll be able to post your photos in the Flickr group and the only difference will be that there won't be a link back to a blog address.

Please respond in the comment section, or via email if you'd like to participate in my Brynwood Farmer's Wife Sampler Quilt QAL. (Please include your blog url if you have one.) I plan to have special giveaways throughout the year for the participants, and will be surprising members of the "party" with a few other things as we progress.

Looking Back on 2011...

As I reflect on 2011, I look back upon a year filled with joy, sadness, anticipation, fun and new experiences.

I promise not to dwell on the moments of great sadness, but I can't close out this year without remembering the beautiful lives of my Labrador, Kes - and my first Corgi, Fezzik Inconceivable. They filled our days with unconditional love and laughter.

Both left me this year. I miss them every day, and will never forget the lights they brought into our lives.

We had the adventure of our lives when Handsome, Kes and I embarked on a four month trip last summer. We packed our essentials ~~along with too many extras~~ into our Airstream and set off on our travels.

Together, we covered nearly 11,000 miles, 13 states, enjoyed friends and family, and were a part of some incredible music performances. We learned that we can live happily together in a small space, and that less "stuff" is actually liberating. We're already planning our next big destination!

Brynwood's Taggart (aka Tag) joined our adventure mid-trip (July 4th) and he immediately fit right in. He was a natural for traveling, and did his best to make friends with Kes. We're so glad that he's a part of our family now, and we're looking forward to spending many more years with him. Even now, he considers the Flying Cloud his home, and he gets quite animated when he realizes we're going out to spend a little time there.

Although Kes didn't return home with us, she'll always be with us in spirit. I miss her silly ways, and her ability to teach the puppies by example.

I want to thank all of you for the comments, love and support you've given me. You help lift me during the most difficult days, and made them more bearable. You're Still The One...

We'll be spending today as we've spent many anniversaries before. We'll be training dogs and having fun outside.

One For Me, One For Tag...

I was so tickled to find that I'd won the drawing that Anne hosted on her blog, Fiona & Twig. I just love Anne, and have watched over the past year or so as she's found her true calling. Her photography is stunning, and she has an eye for finding the most wonderful ways to capture the world around her!

She was offering a "Dreaming of Junking" 2012 Calendar (with her work on the cover and inside!), and a new copy of Artful Blogging (which features an article she wrote, along with more of her own photography). I was surprised (and veeery happy) when she contacted me to let me know I'd won!! This is her original giveaway post.

I pored over the calendar, and am going back to the magazine time and again to soak in every gorgeous page. Thank you, Anne for picking me. I'm so grateful, and consider myself extra fortunate to be able to call you "friend".

On another note...I did what I said I was going to do yesterday. I baked Corgi biscuits to take to Tag today! I cut out corgi shapes, and baked every little leftover piece to make as many treats as possible!

We'll be on our way around ten this morning, and our appointment is to meet Mike and Tag at the Ranch at 1 pm. We'll probably be there early. (Ya think?)

In case you missed the link for the dog biscuit recipe, here it is one more time. (They're called "Boomer and LuLu's Peanut Butter Crunch Biscuits". Boomer and LuLu were featured on The Daily Corgi blog when they shared their recipe.) Everything is safe and good for dogs, and because I made them myself, I know exactly what's in them. I admit we tasted them, too. Handsome said they "stuck to the roof of his mouth". (giggling here) Granted we only tasted a corner of one.

I'm sure that Tag is going to love them, and it will be up to him whether or not he wants to share them with his friends. I'm sure that little minx, Ike (his roomie) will get at least one!

You're going to have to wait til Tuesday to see pictures and a video of The Boy, but I'll get my "Tag fix" very soon! I've gotta run. Time to turn toward Okeechobee.

Tuesdays With Tag - It Runs In The Family...

Do you remember the photograph I posted of Tag last summer while we were traveling? I found him perched on the table between our beds in the Flying Cloud. He's so cheeky!

I received this photograph last week from Tag's Aunty of his brother, Trip. I guess it runs in the family - right along with those ears! (Notice the well-behaved Lab sleeping on the sofa. lol)

I'll be heading over to the Ranch to see Taggart tomorrow. Today, I'm going to make corgi biscuits to take along for him. (He can share them with his kennel mates to celebrate the holidays!)

I purchased all this corgi goodness (the cookie cutter and corgi magnets) from Tasha Tudor's website here. This is the link for the cookie cutter, in case you want one for yourself. The cookie cutter came with a cookie recipe for people, but this is the link to the biscuits I'll be making for Tag and his friends.

Memory Lane Monday - Family...

Christmas Day 1959 (I'm the one on the right.)

I remember those early Christmas celebrations when the most important thing was getting that present I really wanted from Santa. In 1959, it was a baby doll that I adored. As I became older, other things became more important.

Our 1986 family Christmas card.

In 1984, I married Handsome and we were immediately a family of four. I was privileged to become a stepmom to 13 and 8 year old boys.

My focus moved from "me" to "us", and through the years we've added to our family in the most wonderful ways.

Our elder son married his ~~childhood~~ junior high school sweetheart, and we've been blessed to have her as part of our family...

...and when Son #2 married his sweetheart, we thought it couldn't get any better. Our family celebrations took on new meaning as our family grew. It wasn't really about the presents. It was about the gifts of love and shared lives.

Now our lives all include three of the most remarkable young people who, daily, take our breaths away. When the Christmas card arrived from our elder son's family, I almost dropped to my knees. This little man continues to make my heart stop every time I look at his face. I don't expect you to feel the same. I'm his Grandma, after all, but I'll completely understand if you agree with me.

Then we got our Christmas card from Son #2 and his family. As grandparents, Handsome and I look at our granddaughters and our hearts swell with love. Not only were we blessed with that dark-haired beauty, but God saw fit to bless us with another red-head. That impish grin perfectly shows her personality, which she is more than happy to share with us, whether on the phone or in person.

Being a part of our family is an honor that I never even imagined as a child. I say "honor" because carrying on our family name and teaching our values to our boys and our grandchildren is not something I take lightly. In our family, the best way to teach is to lead by example. I want them to be proud to carry our name and all the integrity, honesty and history it carries, and they always know that they're loved by us. Of all the things a person can give to their family, I value these things the most.

As we move into a new year and a new start, I again make a resolution that I find easy to keep. I will continue to be the person that my family is proud to call their own, and a person who will always make them the first priority (after their father/grandfather) in my life. For me, there's no other way.

Blissfull ATC Swap - December...

I had so many things going on recently that I neglected to post about the December Blissfull ATC Swap group! This month's theme was "A Christmas Carol".

I chose the image of Bob Cratchit and Tiny Tim for mine. I used my favorite fabric, added tiny bells, a shiny star, red silk ribbon, a little holly and berries, and then finished it with Tiny Tim's famous quote: "God Bless Us, Everyone!"

I sent it off to my swap partner on the 15th, and hers arrived shortly after.

My swap partner was Melanie of Rabbit Hole Art. She created a great card! Melanie used the image of Charles Dickens at his writing desk. She added glitter trim, a shiny gem, holly and berry ribbon and word banners. It's another wonderful addition to my atc collection. Thank you, Melanie!

A Corgi Ornament...

I received a Christmas package from my blog bestie, Shell at The Raspberry Rabbits. It came as a surprise, and when I opened the package I actually started to cry!

Staring up at me was this gorgeous, glass corgi to hang on my tree, and then reside year-round in the studio.

I mean...Look at this face!!

Shell included one of her annual handcrafted cards (I smile when I get those bunnies each year!), and to keep my corgi ornament safe, she also sent along a soft, felted wool acorn ornament.

How good was I this past year to have received these special gifts from my beautiful friend? I know my corgi friends are all going to want one, but this one is mine and I'll treasure it forever.

Thank you, dear Shell. You really hit the mark on the head when you chose my gifts this year. Sending long distance hugs filled with gratitude for you!

Feeling A Little Sheepish...

We had a gift exchange at Paneras last night and it was so much fun. All of our gifts ended up being pretty comparable in size even though we never discussed our projects ahead of time.

One of the gals made chocolate stir spoons. (I can't wait to use mine!) Another gift was a candy cane in a crocheted "snuggy" with a choice of a gingerbread man or snowman button embellishment. It doubles as an ornament and it's so cute! Tammy made cute holiday earrings for each of us, and we all immediately put them on. There were also gifts of little meat tarts and cookies. Everything was so wonderful, and we really had a fun night.

Tammy also made an "extended" Birthday gift for me...a gorgeous yarn bowl that she threw herself in a pottery class she just completed. It's so beautiful! My Birthday was officially extended to seventeen days this year! Thank you, my friend.

Krisann surprised me with a special teeny, tiny crocheted basket with yarn balls and needles. The needles were made from toothpicks! Thank you, Ka for such a sweet gift.

I decided to make keychains for each of the gals. I used knitting sheep fabric to make the fob for the keychain and then added heart twill tape to secure the large split rings to the fob. I sewed two pieces of fabric together and then stuffed them with silk-blend fiberfill. Of course, it's not finished until I add my label. You use labels on your projects, don't you? (I get my labels from a couple of great sellers on etsy, and I've always been happy with their products.)

I hope you're finding time for little gatherings with friends over the holidays. It really didn't matter that our gifts were small. All of them were made from the heart, and isn't that what the season is all about?

Tuesdays With Tag - Taking A Break With Me...

We had so much fun last week when I saw The Boy. I shot a short video to share with you when he was taking a break. (I trimmed his toenails, brushed his teeth and then gave him a few treats in preparation for his video debut!) Isn't he a good looking eight-month-old Corgi?

New Pincushions...

I really had fun making these pincushions for my Saturday morning coffee group friends. (There were actually five, but I took this picture before the last one was finished.)

I used beautiful, glass containers that are reminiscent of mercury glass pieces. After the poufs were gathered, stuffed with a silk-blend fiberfill and glued to the tops of the candleholders, I set about creating the embellishments.

All of them are matching. I first sewed a blue crystal button onto the pouf. Then I cut a length of silk ribbon and ruched it around the button - gathering, sewing and securing as I went. My final touch was the little pewter thimble charm that hangs beneath the button and ruffles. Finished, they measure approximately 4.5" high by 3" across.

I signed the bottom of each piece and presented one to each of my quilting friends when we met for coffee last Saturday. We meet each week at the quilt shop (two of the members of the group own the shop), and Nora immediately loaded hers up with pins that we sitting next to her machine! I think that each one will see a lot of use, and will add a pretty touch to the sewing tables of my friends.

My Christmas Sewing "To Do List"...

All the items marked (DONE) were completed by December 17th and were either shipped in plenty of time to arrive by Christmas or hand-delivered.

You can see that I still have to ~~re-work~~ complete the garment bags (for Handsome), as well as making that small wall quilt and the gifts for my friends in the Tuesday night Paneras group. Nothing like waiting 'til the last minute! I'll be working on those projects due tomorrow night today.

OK, Shell...Are we going to make a New Years' Resolution to have all of our gift projects finished by - oh, say - November 15th in 2012? That's my resolution and I'm saying it out loud now in front of you, God and all my blog friends!

I'm working to finish everything left on my list by Thursday. I want to roll into the weekend able to put my feet up and celebrate Christmas with decorations and a few special meals with friends.

Santa's Tired...

The elves are taking a break. The last of the immediate gifts are made and are shipping out today. I can't show any more full photos until after Christmas, but I took pictures of everything so I can share them later.

I still have a few things to make, but there isn't the urgency on these that there was for the others. (The gang at Paneras meets on Tuesday, so I can work on their gifts on Sunday or Monday, for example.) I think I'll just rest for a bit and regroup so I don't miss any of the things I planned to do.

Tag is going to be in an obedience demo with "Uncle Mike" today. I'm so proud of him and wish I could be there to see all the smiling faces as they, too, fall in love with my corgi! I'm hoping someone takes photos so I'll be able to add them to his "Boot Camp" scrapbook.

Grammies Girls...

I finished the Grammies Jammies for the girls yesterday. I did something a little different this year. Rather than sew the tops, I purchased the tops for all three of our grandchildren. I saw these soft and stylish sleep tops in the colors I needed, so I started with a finished top and added embellishments that would match the bottoms.

For Granddaughter #1 (with the dreamy hazel eyes), I purchased a long-sleeved Henley top that already had a little lace trim. I added a floral patch taken from the fabric I used to sew up the bottoms. I also have a second top that has short sleeves and I made that one "girly", too.

Granddaughter #2 (the little red-haired beauty) was easy. I added corgi appliques' to hers, cut from the same fabric I used for her bottoms. The tops are both short-sleeved, and I can see her wanting to wear hers day and night!

Grandson's jammies are nearly finished and I'll show those Saturday. I'll be sure to get pictures of all the items I've made before they get mailed out to their new homes. (I always do, don't I?)

Thursday With Tag - Reunion...

"Looks like a herd...and I'm a herding dog. Hmmmm."

What a wonderful day yesterday. I drove over to Boot Camp and met up with Tag and his trainer, Mike to see my corgi's progress. (He's eight months old already!)

Tag was in the training truck when I got there. When I knew Mike was going to take him out of his kennel, I crouched down to wait for the boy. He sat down with his back to me, completely focused on Mike, so he didn't know I was there yet. I quietly said, "Hey, Tag", and he turned and sprinted to me!

Once he got to me, he showed me just how glad he was that I was there. He was rubbing up against me, cuddling and being completely silly. He was so cute I could have just sat there like that all afternoon, but there was work to do!

Mike told me that Tag is "co-habitating" while he's at Boot Camp. He shares his bunk with a sweet little, female spaniel named "Ike" and they're getting along famously. (That's her in the picture.)

Mike showed me how well Tag is learning his lessons. He's heeling, sitting, staying, going to a down position on command, and he's even sitting "remotely" (away from the handler).

In this picture, Mike has called him in from a remote sit. He was trucking so fast that he looked airborne!

"Look, Mom. No hands!

Can you sheee me fetching? Aren't you proud of me?"

Mike said that Tag's workout went very well. He did a little celebration dance while Tag looked on. After Mike finished with Tag, I put on my whistle and took him through his paces. Mike cheered us on and told us that Tag is really learning quickly. (I think he likes my boy!)

After his workout, Tag and I got to spend some quality time together. I trimmed his toenails, brushed his teeth - and perhaps a few treats were handed out. I couldn't possibly comment!

I get to see him again in two weeks, and then, two weeks after that, Tag will graduate from Boot Camp. He's majoring in "Being a Good Dog" and minoring in "Fetching". I wonder if he'll get a certificate?

Tag has learned so much already, so he'll be rockin' and rollin' by the time I get back! I've got a lot more photos, but I'll save a few for the next Tuesdays With Tag post.

For everyone who asked me to give him a hug and a smooch from you when I saw him...I sure did! He liked every little bit of affection, too! He asked me to tell all his "Aunties" he said "hi!"

Button Floozies Ornament Swap Gifts...

It's time for me to show you the gorgeous ornaments I received from my swap partners in the Button Floozies Ornament Swap.

These are the ornaments I sent out to my three partners. (Remember, I showed them to you late last month?) All three of my partners have sent theirs to me now, too. Wait til you see their gorgeous creations!

The first to arrive was this beautiful Button Ballerina from Marsha of the Oklahoma Button Society. Becky started with white pipe cleaners, added an empty thread spool for a body, crepe paper for her ballerina skirt and buttons for the head and hanger. Isn't it pretty? (Thank you, Marsha!!! You're so creative!)

Next to arrive was this beautiful ivory stocking from Becky of Rebecca Rose Designs. Her stocking is embellished with printed muslin fabric, and a paper rose and velvety leaf. Vintage buttons finish off her pretty stocking ornament. (I love it, Becky! Perfect for any decor and full of vintage lovliness! Thank you.)

Last, but not least is the gorgeous ornament I received from Deb of Deb's Vintage Soul. The base of her ornament is a wooden disc, which she covered with silver glitter. Then she added a green cameo to the center and encircled it with buttery vintage buttons. She added a sweet curly hanger to the top and sent it off to me. (Thank you, Deb! I love what you created and it will be the perfect addition to our tree!)

Finally, thank you to Laurie of Button Floozies who organized the swap. I sent an ornament off to her, too. It was a variation on my nutcracker ornament. I embroidered her nutcracker in dusty blue and all the buttons I chose were toy-themed to make it look like the toys a child might find under the tree on Christmas morning.

I really enjoyed the swap, and appreciate the hard work that Laurie and my swap partners put into the exchange. Not Tuesday With Tag - I Think I Did It...

I have told you ~~an interminable number of~~ many times that I can't make a doll. But one of the items on my To Do list is a stuffed toy. So, I ask you this question..."Can a stuffed toy be a doll?"

I looked on etsy and found this little monster. Would you considered this a doll for some lucky child?

Then, I found this stuffed toy. How about it? Is this considered a doll?

I bet you're wondering why I'm asking this, aren't you? Well, my little red-haired granddaughter has fallen in love with one particular corgi. She talks about Tag all the time and even draws pictures of him, so I decided I had to try to make a stuffed toy for her, and my Little Man would be the perfect subject!

I took this photograph and printed it on cotton fabric with my inkjet printer. It really was easy as pie.

I decided to use a beautiful, hand-dyed wool felt for the back. I cut around the image, leaving a 1/4 for sewing and joined the front to the back (right sides together) leaving a small area (between his front and back leg) for turning.

I stuffed "Stay Tag" (that's what I've called him!) with a silk-blend fill so that it was really firm and then stitched the opening closed.

"Stay Tag" measures approximately 8" tall (including his ears!). He'll be just the right size for a little red-haired girl to carry around with her to remind her of her favorite corgi.

The question remains. Is a stuffed toy a doll, and if so, have I finally accomplished the impossible? Can I make a doll? I'll be anxious to know what you think!

I'm going to see Tag tomorrow, so this week you'll be able to read about him on Thursday. I'm so excited I probably won't sleep tonight! I promise ~~a nauseating number~~ lots of pictures!

A Little Christmas Spirit...

Sunday was filled with music...and not much sewing.

The North Port Concert Band presented their Christmas concert in the afternoon, and it was everything a Christmas celebration should be. (Of course, I thoroughly enjoyed Handsome's musical contributions!)

How accustomed we've become to the concerts to really kick-start our festive spirit. Musical friends, the sweet sound of children singing and well-loved Christmas music bringing the holidays into focus in a climate where we can't rely on snow to signal the season's arrival.

Once we're seated in the auditorium, the twinkling lights, the glow of an artificial fireplace and sparkling attire transports us to our childhood memories of Christmases past, and for a couple of hours we forget the warm weather and palm trees right outside the doors.

I really wish you could have all been here to enjoy the music with us. I'll be back tomorrow. Today, I'll accomplish a few things from my To Do list to share with you (and I'm sure I'll be humming a carol or two while I stitch away.

Finished Christmas Quilt...

It's finished and ready to mail out to its new home!

I quilted (loosely, for a more prim look) around the motifs, and I even added a special little quilted motif.

Look where the yellow (sort of) oval is. I couldn't resist, and the snowmen looked like they could use the company. Still can't see it (even if you click on the photo to enlarge it?) Here. I'll give you a closer look...

A Christmas Corgi!

The red star border is quilted with hearts, lines for the checkered fabric and then I finished the last snowflake border with a little "needle dancing" (what I call meandering). I sure hope the person receiving it likes it!

Koi Fish and Cranes...

Tuesday night was the Christmas party for our quilt guild and I came away with this fabric pack. You've seen the pictures of ~~the insane amount~~ the fabric in my studio, right? I knew right away that I would share this assortment with one lucky reader here at Brynwood.

A Christmas Quilt In Progress...

These are the fabrics I chose for the Christmas lap quilt I'm making as a gift for...oops!...no way! I'm not telling! HA!

The center of the design is actually a Christmas panel with a nice, prim look. There are three messages on it. "All is Merry and Bright", "Let it snow!" and "Peace on Earth". I love the colors and they'll coordinate perfectly in the recipient's home.

I really like the black and white check I chose for this, too. It wasn't part of the line, but really looks great with it.

I finished the quilt top yesterday, and when I get back home this afternoon from running errands this morning, I'll assemble the top, batting and back and machine quilt it all together. I'm going to do a little detail quilting around the motifs in the center panel, and then play around on the border.

I'll use the red stars for the binding to finish it off. I'm hoping to check this project off my To Do List by tonight.

What do you think I should do next from my list? (I put the list on my left sidebar and will mark each item off as I finish it. I'm having trouble deciding what to do next.

Playing Chicken...

The elves and I are hard at work in the studio. We're cranking out Christmas gifts, so we thought we'd take a break to share a completed project.

I've finished a set of six two-sided napkins and six coordinating placemats. The napkins feature roosters on one side, and chicks on the other. They measure 18" square and are made from 100% cotton.

I didn't choose matching placemats so that they can be used separately with other napkins. They have a light fabric on one side, and I used the same fabric on the back that is on the binding for two completely different looks.

I have a list of projects that I'll need to finish to ship out by the 15th. This one is taken care of, but I still have other items on my list.

We didn't end up going to Ft. Myers, but Handsome and I still rolled out the Harleys and had a quiet dinner together in Nokomis, FL. It was a perfect night for a ride and a perfect Birthday, to be sure.

This is what fiFtY sEvEn years looks like on me.

Today is my Birthday!

I'm sure you're wondering how I'm going to spend today.

This morning, I'll be with my girlfriends at Sandy's Quilt Shop for our Saturday Coffee Group. I won't say for sure, but there may be cupcakes!

Then, this afternoon Handsome and I are riding out on our Harleys to join members of the Port Charlotte Chapter of the Harley Owners Group to travel south to Ft. Myers.

Our destination is the Parrot Key Caribbean Grill on Ft. Myers Beach. We'll be dining on local cuisine, and watch the annual Christmas Boat Parade after dark.

There will be no alcohol consumed because we're riding, however, I'm making no promises that there won't be a Malibu and pineapple juice cocktail waiting for me upon our safe return home.

How does that sound for a day of celebration for a wife, stepmom and grandma who is and will always be young at heart?

I'm so grateful for my husband - who is my one true love, my family - who gives me purpose, my health, my friends, and above all, God - who continues to bless my life each and every day. I really have a wonderful life!

I'm so glad that you all care for me. You help bring the joy into my life by being a part of it.

I'm off to play! (I am taking my camera. Photos next week!)

New Birthday Books...

Two new packages arrived...For Me!!! I didn't just tear them open. I took photos of the wrapping and everything, but to tell the truth, my pictures left a lot to be desired, so I'm going to spare you those images.

The first package came from my beautiful friend, Shell in North Carolina. I was so surprised! I hadn't expected a package from the Raspberry Rabbits. What could this be?

I started by opening the envelope (that's what I was taught to do...always, envelope first!) to find the coolest card (I just saw this card on her blog this week when she showed us some of her haul on a grand day out with our mutual friend, Sharon. I was jealous that I missed the outing!).

Her card explained the gifts I would find inside the package, and I couldn't wait to see what she'd chosen for me. Two new books to inspire me, get the creative juices flowing and offer some new ideas. I haven't put the books down since I opened them!

One book is titled, Living The Creative Life by Rice Freeman-Zachary. It's filled with the artwork of various artists and how they embark on their creative processes. The images are really tantalizing!

The second book is titled, Taking Flight (to give your Creative spirit wings) by Kelly Roberts. I will be telling you more about this book another time, but let me just say that the stories (I've read a few already), images and techniques have already given me ideas for future projects.

Shell has been a great cheerleader for me, and more than once, she's been my sounding board when I have an idea I need to bounce off her. I, then, am not surprised in the least to find that she'd know just the perfect gifts to send to me for my Birthday. Did I say what a good friend I have in her? She's just the best!

Thank you, Shell for remembering my Birthday and taking the time to choose such wonderful books to add to my creative library. I have a feeling they won't be spending any time on my shelf for a long while. I'll be devouring the contents of their pages.

The second package was from my mum. As her first-born, I have a special bond with her. There have been times when I just felt that I needed to talk with her, picked up the phone to dial her number and there she was before I even punched the numbers in! Other times, she or I have long-distance sympathy pains only to find, days later, that one or the other of us was sick, sad or otherwise in pain. It's really uncanny.

Mum also knows how much I love books, and she found two that really struck a chord with me. The first is called "Grandmas Are Special People" illustrated by Susan Winget. There are sweet sentiments, verses and stunning illustrations, but I think the most beautiful part of this book is the inscription from my Mum. I smiled as my eyes welled with tears.

Now, if anyone is bewildered by the second book, you haven't been around Brynwood very long. Mum chose "Corgiville Christmas" by Tasha Tudor. Yup. It's a children's book, but it's filled with all those adorable little Tasha Tudor Corgis and I have just the granddaughter who will love sitting on Grandma's lap to turn the pages with me!

There was one more item in my gift box from Mum. She gave me a warm hug in the form of a British cardigan that she bought last time she visited relatives in England. It fits me perfectly, and with our current "chilly" snap, it's going to get immediate use! I promise that I'll ask Handsome to take a picture of me wearing it so you can see it.

Thank you, Mumsy. Everything you chose for me is just perfect. I'll think of you whenever I wear my new cardi...and if I need a pep talk in the middle of the night, I'll just read the inscriptions you wrote in the front of my two new books. I love you...from your #1.

Gosh...I think Handsome is going to be right. "Spoiled Brat" is starting to fit, don't you think? He told me that I'm supposed to stay out of...now where was that? Great! I guess I don't have to worry about snooping around for the gift he's already chosen...and hidden for me. Dang! I can't remember where he told me I shouldn't go. Guess I'll just hang out in the studio 'til tomorrow and I should be alright.

Man, I love, love, love my life! I'm still such a lucky girl, living a truly blessed life. Thank you for being a part of it.

PS. Happy Birthday, Larry. I love you and know that you're watching over me.

More Gifties Arrived...

Can you even believe that today is December 1st already? 2011 is quickly coming to an end and I still have so much left to do! Yesterday was another day filled with surprises. There were two packages in the mail for me!

I opened a package from my generous friend, Sherry E. of Createology to find this clever origami bag. (I took the liberty of staging it with my acorn fairy in an acorn-adorned frame.) The fabric Sherry chose fits right in with my acorn decor, doesn't it?

The fabric is folded and sewn to create a pocket on each side of the bag, and Sherry chose tiny tree charms for the flaps. They're perfect choices, Sherry!

I haven't figured out how everything folds together to make up this little tote, but I'm going to keep examining it until I do! I can't wait to use it, too!

Sherry, you are so generous with your time and your talents and I can't tell you how I appreciate the treasures you send my way. Thank you, my friend. I will cherish you and your creation(s) always!

Although I knew a second package was on its way, I had no idea what to expect inside. Wendy W. of The Frog Palace and The Life of Me contacted me to ask for my address, telling me she had something she wanted to send to me. I admit I was intrigued and couldn't wait to open her package when it arrived!

Her handcrafted card had this tiny acorn glued on one corner. (I bet she made that, too!)

Inside I found ornaments made of glass and other natural elements. A glitter-sprinkled pine cone ready to hang in the studio as well as a little "nature boy" ornament created from wood.

Wendy added this artful collage of craftsy items and the verse about creativity. I see something new every time I look at it. (Wouldn't it be fun to play "Eye Spy" with my granddaughters using this?) I have placed it in my wall organizer hanging across from my sewing machine. It looks right at home there!

Look at this teeny, tiny glass squirrel. I'm so glad it made the trip safely to me - as well as the slightly larger glass acorn. They're both so beautiful, and I've never seen a little squirrel ornie before!

I have the perfect spot to hang them so they can be viewed and admired every day. This is the arch in the window in my studio, and the all three new ornaments will join the rest of my collection where they'll be visible from inside the studio - or outside when I'm in the pool area. (Don't miss the new, little "Green Man" ornament hanging on the right end of the rod!)

Thank you, Wendy for thinking of me when you saw the ornaments...and for all the wonderful gifts you sent to me. I love your thoughtfulness and generosity. Sending great big hugs to you across the miles.

My actual Birthday is December 3rd (Saturday), but without even knowing it, my friends are helping me stretch my celebration. Mum told me a package is on its way and Handsome ran a secret mission yesterday. At this rate, he's going to declare me a bona fide "Spoiled Brat" by Saturday...and he'll be right! One of our running jokes around here is that he's not Mr. Right. He's Mr. Always Right** (again).

I find that I'm constantly inspired by my blog friends. I hope that even in the process of writing about the gifts I receive, you'll find inspiration or ideas for gifts to share with your loved ones. As I work my way through my handcrafted Christmas list over the next two weeks, I'll write about them for a little inspiration of my own.

(**I'm required to add a little right-hand wrist flair for effect when I say that. lol)

Let The Merriment Commence...

If you know me, you know that I'm really silly about my Birthday. (See? I capitalized the word "Birthday".) I consistently s-t-r-e-t-c-h out the celebration of my BIG day every year. In that spirit, it's time for the merriment to commence.

The celebration officially began last Saturday when a package arrived from my friend, Denise in Vermont. Denise always includes Vermont maple treats in her surprise packages, and this year was no exception. Two sweet maple lollipops in the shape of maple leaves are always a welcome treat!

A cute Corgi Birthday card was included, with a much appreciated message from my dear and generous friend.

Denise also sent a box that revealed these perfect little pewter acorns. Danforth Pewter is located in Vermont! Two are buttons and one is a tac pin.

As soon as I realized that it was a pin, I knew where it would reside. This is the quilted name tag I made to wear to our Disconnected Piecers Quilt Guild meetings. Now, whenever anyone asks about the acorn, I can proudly tell them that it was a gift from my friend in Vermont.

Thank you, Denise (and Neil). I love everything! I promise I'll share the lollipops with Handsome. He just loves that maple candy you send to me him. I'm so grateful for your gifts - but much more grateful for your friendship. Sending warm and grateful hugs your way.

So, it's official. Let's see how long I can stretch out the celebration this year. I think I'll host a giveaway on my actual birthdate. You'll have to keep track all week to find out more! Don't you love surprises? (giggling) I do, too.

Tuesdays With Tag - First Day of Camp...

Last week was pretty exciting for Tag. It was time to take him to "Camp" to learn good citizenship (and a few other useful and fun things).

Handsome and I have had a long, long relationship with the Sommers family in Wisconsin and now, in Florida. So, when it's time to call in the pros, we head to wherever the Sommers are.

We took Tag over to Mike and Joann's facility the day before Thanksgiving, and were so happy to know that we'd be spending the holiday with our friends this year.

We arrived late Wednesday, settled Tag in his "suite", and then the four of us went off to share a relaxing dinner. Tag's "evaluation" would wait until Thanksgiving morning.

Although Tag sauntered into his kennel and ate dinner without hesitation, he was a little overwhelmed by the nighttime proximity of dogs he didn't know. He's used to sleeping on the bed with me, or in his nice comfy crate at night, so having the "open air" arrangement with a leggy goldidoodle on one side and a little black lab (sharing accommodations with a little spaniel) left him barking on and off all night (even though he played with the spaniel through the wire during the day).

Mike (and later, I) both checked on him overnight, but he was less than thrilled to be in his otherwise comfortable kennel. (Don't fret. He was completely fine on Night Two, after we put him in his own crate inside the kennel. He just likes to be a little cozier when he sleeps. Once Mike figured that out, he didn't make a single peep all the second night!)

Thanksgiving morning, Handsome and I settled into lawn chairs so we could have a ring-side seat of the evaluation. Mike started out with a little obedience (heel and sit) and then wanted to check out Tag's fetching skills. Tag was happy to show Uncle Mike how smart he is. Mom was so proud!

After about a half hour of obedience work and running, Mike took Tag for a little swim in a safe, monitored family pond. As you can see in the distance, there's a swim platform that the family uses regularly. No alligators allowed!

Even so, I was nervous about him being in the pond and voiced that to Mike. The rest of his water work will be in their pool instead to put my mind at ease. Thanks, Mike!

Tag loved the swimming, but he wasn't ready for his water retrieving yet. (See the dummy floating in the water behind him?) By the time he's finished with Camp, he'll be jumping into the water to bring that back...and he'll do it with true Corgi flair!

Somebody pinch me. He's so stinkin' cute! Even wet!

Yeah. Mud.

After all. What's Camp without a little mud?

I've asked Mike to make sure that Tag sends postcards home from time to time. You may think I'm a really brave mom for letting Tag go away for ~~seven painfully long weeks!~~ a while. Not really. It's taking everything I have not to travel the three and a half hours across the state to kidnap him and bring him home! I have to keep telling myself that when he comes back, he will be trained and well-mannered for a lifetime of harmony with us. And he won't lose a single ounce of all the traits that make him uniquely Corgi.

I can just imagine him lying upside down in his little crate at night (perhaps missing me), but proud of his daily accomplishments. I'm really looking forward to that first postcard!

Memory Lane Monday - Remembering Grandpa...

He was born in Buena Vista, Wisconsin on January 11, 1911, was forty three years old when I became his first grandchild. He was 16 in this picture. It was taken in my great-grandfather's garage. This was before the building burned to the ground, necessitating a complete rebuild not long after.

Grandpa always worked with his hands and he was a genius when it came to building or repairing anything mechanical. But he had other talents, as well.

Grandpa was also well-versed in the fine arts of pickling and wine-making. He made some fierce dandelion, currant, gooseberry and grape wine (to name but a few).

When we'd visit my grandparents, he'd delight in bringing out jugs of his favorites (especially if they'd fermented for a few years) so that Mum could be his taste-tester. He'd sit with a wide grin on his face, offering her a jigger at a time, and watching her get silly from all those little sips.

I now own two of Grandpa's crocks. One has a two gallon capacity and the other is a beautiful twenty gallon crock with metal bands. I have them where I see them every day, and not one day passes that I'm not reminded of him.

I adored this man. He was hard-working, and although he could turn a room blue with his colorful language, he never raised his voice or passed a cross word with me.

When Handsome and I still lived in Wisconsin, I was only about a half hour away from the nursing home where he spent his sunset years. I'd visit him at least once a week, and ask him to tell me stories from the days working in Alaska, where he helped build the Al-Can Highway. They were stories he was always happy to share with me. Stories of bears, the great outdoors, big machines and his adventurous life in "the wild". I knew he frequently embellished those stories for me, but I didn't care.

He lost his right thumb as a child, and it wasn't until he passed that Grandma finally told me the true story. (He always said that she cut it off in a fit of pique, but we all knew that wasn't true!) When he and I spent all those hours chatting and sharing the past, he'd punctuate his stories with that right hand held in the air, fingers wrapped around the stub of his thumb. If I close my eyes, I can see him to this very day.

As we parted at the end of each visit, I'd always ask him if he wanted me to bring anything when I returned. He'd always say, "No, Honey. Everything is copacetic. See you next week." As I headed for the door he'd add, "But if you'd like to bring a couple of O'Henry bars with you, that would be nice." I always brought them for him. (From time to time, I'll eat an O'Henry bar in his memory now.)

He died January 15, 1999, only a few hours' drive from his birthplace. I was at his side, holding his hand. As his eldest granddaughter, I was honored to give the eulogy at his funeral. It gave me the opportunity to share my memories of his gigantic personality with his many friends and family.

It's with great affection that I share just a small portion of my memories today. I'm proud to have been his granddaughter, but more than that I'm proud to have been a part of the life of this honest man.

Two Silhouettes On The Shade...

We had a wonderful Thanksgiving spent with friends, and hope that your celebration was memorable, too. Thank you to everyone for your holiday messages. I'm so thankful for all of you. As we're still eating (another meal with friends this evening!), I wanted to share a little something special from our family archives.

I know that silhouettes are returning in decor lately, so I decided to hang our precious family heirloom in my studio. I think it's perfect above my vintage baby dresses adorned with Michelle Palmer's acorn art.

These two silhouettes were created of my Handsome husband and his younger brother when they were children. Their mom protected the images behind glass in a black oval frame with gold trim.

I always consider myself fortunate to be able to choose from beautiful items that my mother-in-law kept safe and protected during my husband's lifetime. Because of her care, I'm able to continue that tradition, even as we enjoy them in our own home.

So, at a time when we remember all those things for which we give thanks, I can add my husband and his family - and the heirlooms that mark the moments of their lives - to my list.

You'll remember from last year that I don't "do" Black Fridays. I prefer to create many of my gifts or buy from other artists. I'm going to enjoy the rest of this weekend, and then I'll prepare my list. You can look forward to my annual flurry of activity as I make those gifts that will be shared with family and friends. It all starts next week!

I've been working on a new project for a while now, and I'm finally ready to share my excitement with you! You know how I've become totally smitten since my first exposure to Corgis, and how much I loved Fezzik, and now Taggart. I wanted to create a line with which to share my new found Corgi love.

You'll find a new category in my Brynwood Boutique and my Etsy shop called "For The Love Of A Corgi".

You'll find note cards, mug mats (mugs not included), can coozies and more. I've been so busy in the studio, and I'm still working on new things for you. (Quantities on some items may be limited before Christmas, but there's still plenty of time to place an order.)

I hope you enjoy browsing my newest creations. They'll make perfect gifts for your favorite Corgi lover - or anyone who knows the love of a dog (or two, or three!).

This has really been a Labor of Love, and I'm looking forward to creating new Corgi items for other Corgi fans.

Tuesdays With Tag - Off To Boot Camp...

Taggart and I have been having some important conversations lately.

(I took all these pictures yesterday so you could see what a good-looking boy he's turning into.)

He's already seven and a half months old. Handsome and I have been working on his training, but he can be obstinate and I'm not as consistent as I should be. It's really important to me that he learns his lessons, and I admit his stubbornness has been a little frustrating.

Handsome and I had a long talk about this and, after much deliberation, we agreed that Tag is the most strong-willed dog we've ever owned. Handsome could certainly do all the training, but when finished, Taggart would be more his dog than mine, and that wasn't the plan.

We decided it would be best for Tag to learn from a professional. We want him to learn everything he needs to know without diminishing his unique Corgi personality.

So, this week Taggart is going to train with a man with whom Handsome and I have worked for over thirty years. He is also the son of a trainer we always referred to as "The Maestro".

Ray Sommers had a way with dogs of all breeds, and he trained Handsome's father's first retriever. His son, Mike shared his passion for dogs, and with Ray, they taught us much of what we know about working with our own. They were the original "Dog Whisperers" in Wisconsin.

Michael learned through hard work at his father's side, and he later built his own training business on his personal considerable talent. Sadly, Ray passed away a number of years ago - and he is missed by all who knew and loved him, including Handsome and me.

We're so fortunate that Mike and his wife, Joann chose to relocate to Florida before we came here. Taggart will be moving over to their facility tomorrow, where he will remain for the next seven weeks. Mike will teach him the finer points of citizenship, and then follow up with training to retrieve.

We've decided that Taggart should learn to retrieve because it's some of the best exercise available for a dog, and it will be a great way for Tag to burn off excess energy and stay in shape.

I've been telling Tag about this since I made the arrangements. He's not quite sure what to make of this program, but I know that once he gets into his "school mode", he's going to fall in love with the regimen.

I'm going to miss my little guy, but will see him about three times during "Boot Camp". I'll be taking lots of photos on my visits, so you can follow his progress, too. He'll be practically grown up when he comes back home!

One other thing we discussed is the fact that I haven't let him write his own posts like Fezzik used to. I've promised him that once he finishes his training, I'll let him start sharing in his own voice for Tuesdays With Tag. He can hardly wait!

They're In The Mail...

I signed up for the Button Floozies Ornament Swap this year, and had so much fun making the ornies to mail to my three swap partners.

I decided that a Nutcracker theme might be fun, so I sorted through my machine embroidery designs and chose this one. I decided to embroider them onto canvas. Three Nutcrackers in a row...

My sister, Diana recently sent me a surprise care package. She found some gorgeous, vintage, crocheted doilies and wanted to share them with me. There were two that I knew would work perfectly for this project.

They were 3" in diameter, so I cut them in half and used each half to embellish the bottom of my nutcrackers. I sewed my parts together and then started hand sewing my vintage buttons along the bottom. The little blue ones were from my contemporary stock, but the rest are old.

I made one more, but that one is a little different from these. I'm going to send it back to Diana to thank her for all the goodies she gave me.

They're all on their way to new homes today. My swap work is done here. I'll be starting my Christmas projects now, and I promise to show you what I'm working on in the coming days and weeks.

My Newest Bead...

I know. You just never can tell what I'm going to write about, right? I love being a little unpredictable.

I recently purchased a new bead for my Troll bracelet. I found this Corgi bead on Etsy at NanjoDogz shop, and just had to have it! (By the way...She makes beads in other breeds, too. Just click on her shop name to she what she has available. If you don't see your breed, send her a message and ask.)

Nancy sculpted it from polymer clay, tinted it with just the right colors, and sealed it with varnish for protection. It's lined with silver metal core so it slips nicely along my bracelet.

She even stamped a little paw print on the back. She also included care instructions. Unlike the glass beads, the clay beads shouldn't be submerged in water.

Other than that, her instructions to treat it with TLC really weren't necessary, because I'll treat it as carefully as each of the beautiful, handmade beads I've received from my dear friend, Marion. Marion even gave me the gorgeous silver acorn that always stays on my bracelet along with her paw print bead.

I think one of the cutest things about this little bead is that, if I look at it from just this angle, I even get the "Disapproving Corgi" look. It makes me smile every time.

Blissfull ATC Swap - November...

I just received my November artist trading card for the Blissfull ATC Swap group. Our theme was "Thankful", and my swap partner was Cindy @ Cindy Rose's Garden.

I think her card is wonderful! She chose a turkey as her centerpiece and then added the words "Bountiful" and "Blessings" on each side at the bottom. I'm not sure what her technique is, but I can tell you that I love it! It appears to have silver leaf and tissue paper in it. (Perhaps she'll tell me how she made it, but it's truly grand.)

I'm so thankful that she was my partner this month! The Blissfull group is so much fun and I get to meet so many talented artists, employing various media to interpret each month's theme. Thank you, Cindy!

This is my artist trading card for the swap. You can't see it in my photo, but I started with an ivory fabric as the base for the card and then I hand-stitched the green wool to it to make a pocket. You knew I'd add an acorn, right? The acorn symbolizes the beginning of bigger things to come, so it was perfect to embellish my "thankful" pocket.

I cut five pieces of mat board into strips and stitched one of the things I'm thankful for on five different colored pieces of wool. When I was finished stitching, I glued each piece to its own strip of mat board. After the glue dried, they all slipped right into the pocket. Voila! Finished. Cindy should have it by now, so I know it's safe to show both cards to you today.

Two New Recipes...

I have tried two new low carb recipes that I think you might like, whether you're on a low-carb kick or not. My first dish is called Breakfast Omelet Muffins. Here's the link.

They're like Egg Bake without the crust, and they were a real hit around here. They remind me of the Breakfast Quiches that they serve at Paneras. Next time, I'll also add some sauteed mushrooms and onions, but you could also substitute the Italian sausage with bacon or ham, too!

My friend, Tammy also suggested that I try making my usual potato salad, but substitute the boiled potatoes with steamed cauliflower. I used my own family recipe for potato salad, but there are a few good ones available, too. You might try this one or this one.

I also tried those Zucchini Chips. What did I think of them? Oooook! I used the smaller zucchini that you saute', and perhaps I should have used the larger ones. I may take the time to repeat the recipe with the larger ones, but I won't make them with the small ones again. You might like them, but my opinion is that they were a lot of work with iffy results. I will be trying the Zucchini Fries, though and will let you know what I think of them.

I don't know whether or not I told you before, but I'd gained about eighteen pounds over the summer. I was horrified when I got back home and stepped on the scale, so I immediately went back to my favorite plan - Dr. Atkins - which always works for me.

I started the plan on September 29th and have lost twenty one pounds so far. I'm not finished yet, and I'm finding a lot more options to make following the plan easier to stick with (long term) this time. I'm hoping to be the "Disappearing Woman" over the next six months or so as I make my way back to a normal, healthier weight.

If you'd like, I'll continue to share healthy recipes with you, as I work my way back into a Size 12. Please let me know if you try these recipes, too. I'd love to know what you think.

I'm continuing to work on my Christmas ornaments for the Button Floozies Ornament Swap. I hope to show those to you tomorrow.

Quilts, Quilts, Quilts...

My Summertime Quilt is finished. Remember when I began my whole project last summer? It all started with Rebecca Barker's Quiltscape image of the strawberry basket sitting on a quilt.

I contacted her to make sure she hadn't designed this quilt yet and received her blessings to move forward with creating the quilt and pattern when I learned she had not done so.

I had planned to complete it during our summer travels, but had neglected to pack the border fabrics. Finishing it was my first order of business when we returned home. Kathy at Sandy's Quilt Shop did my machine quilting and I added the binding as soon as I got it back.

I'm going to be writing out the pattern in the upcoming weeks so that I can make it available for purchase. I'll be sure to let you know as soon as that process is done.

Last night was our November Guild meeting. I wanted to make at least one doll quilt to donate to the Salvation Army project. I finished this one with cupcakes on the front and lots of color on the reverse.

The women in our Guild were busy this year. Last year we donated over 50 doll quilts. This year, we outdid ourselves with 74 beautiful and unique quilts for the Salvation Army. A representative was at the meeting to accept our gift, and she was very grateful to have them.

One last thing. I am happy to announce that I took Third Place in the Disconnected Piecers Quilt Guild "Paw and Whiskers" challenge. There were lots of gorgeous, whimsical and lifelike projects, and I consider myself fortunate to have received recognition.

Tuesdays With Tag - 2011 Florida Corgi Picnic...

Last Saturday, Tag and I got in the Explorer and drove three and a half hours over to Palm Bay, FL on the east coast for the 2011 Florida Corgi Picnic to benefit CorgiAid.

Tag and I are right there in the center of this picture (camera in my hands) as we take in all the dogs running and playing. Don't worry. I let Tag run around loose for a little while, too, but I shadowed him all around the grounds to make sure he didn't get into any trouble.

Man! There were a lot of Corgis! Cardigans, Pembrokes, long tails, short tails, fluffy coats - heck, one dog was shaved! Doesn't this one have a great face? These little dogs always look so happy (and intelligent)!

This is the one and only, Facebook-famous Spark Plug and his owner, Bob. They live just north of us in Nokomis, FL. We said we'd get together back on this coast for a little Corgi bonding closer to home.

Everywhere I turned there were short-legged dogs. There were raffles and auctions, and on more than one occasion, groups of Corgis would just lapse into Frantic Random Acts of Play (called "frapping") and they'd get pretty vocal, too. It was quite amusing. At one point, Tag couldn't stand it anymore and had to join in the barking. Hilarious!

I kept Taggart close to me for most of the day, but he still got to meet some of the other dogs who trotted over to say "hello". Look at the cute little spot on this little girl's forehead. So sweet!

This little girl spent part of her afternoon fetching this red rubber ball. She was pretty persistent, too!

The weather was beautiful and a grand time was had by all.

Everyone had a comfy seat for the auction...

or at least a nice shady spot to dog-watch.

I thought this Corgi was adorable in her costume with the

dog bone collar. I think she has a great face, too!

A Florida Gators football fan!

I took lots of pictures of so many great dogs. It was hard to limit my post to these few favorites. We're already looking forward to next year's picnic and hope that Handsome will join us for the festivities. It was really a lot of fun.

November Blissfull ATC Swap...

I finished my artist trading card for the Blissfull ATC Swap group for this month. Our theme was "Thankful". I had a really long list, but these are the most important things to me.

I'll be sending my card (and a few extra surprises) off to my swap partner, Cindy @ Cindy's Rose Garden today so it arrives in plenty of time to meet our deadline. I'm only showing you a peek at the card until I'm sure that Cindy has received it.

Today, I'll be working on some items to donate to the Boutique for our Disconnected Piecers Quilt Guild quilt show in February. We try to get all the items made prior to the holidays. I'm making a couple of doll quilts (24" square), baby bibs and I have already donated a lap quilt to the cause.

We're Off To The Picnic...

Tag and I are on our way to Palm Bay (over on the east coast of Florida) to attend the 2011 Florida Corgi Picnic today. Last year there were over 200 Corgis with their owners! We'll be seeing Pembrokes and Cardigans, and even cross-bred Corgis, but only Corgis are allowed. It's an exclusive party!

There will be contests, food, raffles and auctions - and I imagine more than a bit of Corgi frapping (Frantic Random Acts of Play). All of this will be to benefit CorgiAid - a really worthy cause. We're happy to be a part of the fun.

Tag and I will tell you all about it next Tuesday. We can't wait! Gotta run!

Twice In One Week...

I just had to share more pictures of Tag with you this week! I told you we've been walking in the mornings (not every day, but three or four times a week). Well, on those walkies, Tag gets really grungy paws, tummy and pants. I wanted to clean him up (and in turn, keep our home a little tidier, too) so into the bathtub he went!

Later in the day, I walked into our bedroom to find the Corgi back in the bathroom checking out his towels and the tub. (He hadn't seen it before and was apparently fascinated with our "indoor swimming pool"...in just his size!)

"Hey! Where did all the water go?"

I love his cute pants in this picture! I wonder what he can see. hmmmmm

Yup. That's where the water was, and the faucet is on that end, too. Is he wanting to get back in there again? Is he thinking about swimming? Who knows what lurks deep in the heart of a Corgi? (muahahaha)

Oh! Hi, Tag!

Tag and I are heading across the state early Saturday morning to attend the 2011 Florida Corgi Picnic. I haven't gone before, but their website says that they had over 200 Corgis last year! We managed to get registered, so we'll leave home at about 6 am and be home after dark.

There will be raffles, auctions, contests and other events. It's going to be great fun! We'll tell you all about it next Tuesday (with pictures, of course!).

Because You Just Never Know...

Many days I write my blog posts and never know the lives I touch with my words. Each day, my goal is to write a thoughtful post about the "joyful and creative" aspects of my life. Then there are days where I share some of the less joyful or less creative stories I have to tell.

If you've been reading my blog for a while, you'll know that this past year has had some sad days, too. Those dark days when I lost Fezzik so unexpectedly, and then this fall when Kes (and my former Golden, Kirby) joined him at the Rainbow Bridge during our travels. Our dogs lives are so very short to begin with, but it still comes with sadness when their times come and they must leave us.

I don't recall this for you to make you relive those sad days with me. Rather, to explain the stories that prompted one of my blog friends to send me a package recently. I received a package in the mail Tuesday and I hate to say that I didn't recognize the return address. Marie in Ohio. Hmmmm. Did I order something and forget where I purchased it? I didn't think so.

Handsome, Tag and I walked back to the house whereupon I immediately went back to the studio to open the box so it would reveal its contents. Imagine my surprise to find so many wonderful surprises inside!

An adorable squirrel holding acorn salt and pepper shakers. Marie knows how I adore acorns and thought of me when she found this. Then, she also added two little sewing (quilting) kits. The sweetest snowman is the center of a small accent quilt from The Wooden Bear Designs, and all the supplies in another kit to create a little zippered Out & About carry-all. Aren't they wonderful?

Marie also added two pieces of nautical-themed fabric that I know will work perfectly with a recent lighthouse fabric purchase.

I opened her handwritten card first, but wanted to save its sentiment for last. Marie told me that she reads my blog all the time - although she doesn't have one of her own yet - and that she saw the acorn s/p set and got them just for me. (Imagine that!) She also traveled this summer, but spends time in Winter Haven, FL, too. I'm hoping that I will get to see her on her next trip south so that I can thank her in person. (Marie...please send me an email through my blog so that we can see if there's time to get together while you're here!)

By the time I'd finished her card, I admit I was a little weepy. She wrote the most beautiful words to me and I want her to know that she - and all of you - bless me every day with your thoughts and comments, and sometimes with your gifts. Thank you, my new friend, for all the special gifts you sent to me. They will be used and cherished for a long time to come.

I also received another gorgeous artist trading card from Sherry @ Createology. She is so talented and artistic. I'm tickled to have another card from her to add to my collection. I owe you, my friend! I'll get your cards out this week I promise.

So, if you're wondering if anyone reads what you write on your blog, or whether or not you touch anyone with your thoughts, I'm proof that we all do. I'll continue to share those thoughts on my joyful and creative life with you, and try to keep the "reality" posts to a minimum. When I'm writing to you, I'll continue to write as though I'm sitting down to tea with my girlfriends (and boy friends, too). After all, you just never know whose life you might touch...and occasionally, they'll touch you right back.

Again, I am humbled beyond words at the generosity of my long-distance friends. Thank you.
